Honda BR-V Overview

After witnessing the consistent successes of compact MPVs from its arch-rivals in the Philippines car market, Honda decided to join the bandwagon with the all-new Mobilio, which was based on its small car platform of the Honda Brio. The Mobilio turned out to be a decent success story for Honda Philippines, which prompted Honda to level up, and this led to the launch of BR-V in the country. Essentially a rugged-looking version of the Honda Mobilio, the Honda BR-V has a completely revised front fascia and few styling add-ons to its exterior, which gives this seven-seater MPV an SUV-ish flavor.

Honda BR-V History

After launching the humble and affordable Mobilio in the Philippines car market, Honda decided to tap into a segment of rugged-looking seven-seater compact crossovers, which was a very niche space a few years ago. This idea flowered in the form of the birth of all-new Honda BR-V in 2016.

The Honda BR-V was introduced as a more premium and rugged-looking offering over the Honda Mobilio and was for all those who wanted the essence and visual appeal of an SUV in an MPV. For the BR-V, Honda picked the platform and basic design of the Mobilio, with the latter completely revamped in the form of the wholly revised front fascia and rear profile. However, the interior cabin was more or less kept unchanged over the Mobilio, which was not a bad thing, considering how practical the interior cabin of Honda Mobilio is.

Honda BR-V Highlight

Since its launch in 2016, the Honda BR-V has been on offer in only two different variants – S and V. Both these variants get the same petrol automatic powertrain – a 1.5-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine coupled to a CVT gearbox. This powertrain combination is something which we have already seen in other Honda cars such as Honda Jazz, Honda City, and Mobilio, and here in the BR-V too, it is in the same state of tune as in other cars – 120 PS of maximum power and 145 Nm of maximum torque.

Over the Mobilio, the Honda BR-V looks more rugged and visually better appealing, with bits like projector headlamps, body cladding, skid plates at front and rear, roof rails, and better-looking machined alloy wheels adding to its glory. The interior cabin has been left untouched over the Mobilio, with the Honda BR-V getting features like a multi-functional steering wheel, touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, rear AC vents, height-adjustable driver’s seat, and push-button start.

Honda BR-V Safety

The Honda BR-V covers the basic grounds when it comes to being equipped with safety features, with the standard list comprising of inclusions like dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, reverse parking sensors and camera, hill start assist and ISOFIX mounts for child seats.

Honda BR-V Fuel Consumption

As in other Honda cars equipped with 1.5-litre petrol engine with a CVT gearbox, the Honda BR-V is a decently fuel-efficient vehicle. The engine and gearbox combination promises a fuel economy of 15.4 Kmpl in the Honda BR-V.

Honda BR-V Pros and Cons

Honda BR-V Pros

  • Rugged looks – The designers at Honda should be praised for the way they have made the BR-V look distinctively different from the Mobilio, with the completely revised front and rear profiles as well as rugged add-ons making it look better MPV over Mobilio.
  • Refined and reliable engine – The 1.5-litre petrol engine with the CVT gearbox is a tried and tested formula by Honda, something which never fails when it comes to offering refinement and reliability in a long run.
  • Spacious comfortable cabin – The Honda BR-V offers surprising levels of space and seating flexibility options for a compact MPV, which is really appreciable.

Honda BR-V Cons

  • Lack of features – Honda has missed the opportunity with the BR-V, as apart from projector headlamps, it comes with no other major additional features over the humble Mobilio, which already lacks a number of modern features on board.
  • No boost in off-road driving ability – The rugged-looking bits do make the Honda BR-V a go-anywhere vehicle only by the means of visual appeal, as it comes with no prominent changes or inclusions to boost its off-road driveability over the Mobilio – not even an increase in ground clearance.
