Kia Stonic Overview
Before the advent of Sonet in Kia Philippines portfolio, it was the Stonic which served as the most affordable and smallest SUV cars from the Korean carmaker. The Kia Stonic was originally introduced in 2017, in order to have a pie from the burgeoning segment of compact crossovers and SUVs. The Stonic is based on the same platform which underpins the company’s premium hatchback, the Rio, and is positioned above the latter as a more premium and aspirational offering.
Kia Stonic History
Kia unveiled the Stonic for the first time for the global audience back in 2017 at the International Motor Show Germany and was developed with the intent of having its presence felt in the compact SUV segment, which has seen a surging demand in recent times.
The Kia Stonic is the most affordable and smallest SUV currently in Kia’s lineup for the Philippines car market and is based on the same platform which has been engineered for some other worldwide popular cars like Kia Rio and Hyundai i20. The Kia Stonic is one of the newest offerings in the Philippines car market as of now, with the SUV still in its very first generation, doing well in the segment to which it belongs.
Kia Stonic Highlight
While the Kia Stonic has been made available with a variety of engine options which range from a puny but powerful 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine to a range-topping 1.6-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, the Philippines car market has been offered only the 1.4-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine, which also powers some other cars from Hyundai and Kia family, including the Hyundai Accent.
The Philippines-spec Kia Stonic has been made available in a total of three different variants – LX MT, LX AT, and EX AT. All these variants are powered by the same 1.4-litre petrol engine aforementioned above. In the base Kia Stonic LX MT variant, this engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and makes 95 PS of maximum power and 132 Nm of peak torque output. The other two variants, Kia Stonic LX AT and Kia Stonic EX AT come with a 6-speed automatic transmission as standard, and here, the engine makes a slightly more power output at 100 PS and 132 Nm of torque.
For the price at which it is available, the Kia Stonic is a decently premium offering, with features like projector headlamps with daytime running LEDs, keyless entry with push-button start, height-adjustable driver seat, automatic climate control, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with reverse camera.
Kia Stonic Safety
Even in terms of safety features, the Kia Stonic is up in the game with standard safety features similar to SUVs from one segment above. The Stonic comes with a safety features list comprising dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, hill start assist, reverse parking sensors with camera, and ISOFIX mounts for child seats.
Kia Stonic Fuel Consumption
The 1.4-litre petrol engine from the Hyundai-Kia family, which is the standard engine option for the Kia Stonic, is known for its good balance of refinement and efficiency. This engine returns a promising fuel efficiency of up to 18.18 km/l, which is equivalent to that of an entry-level car with a smaller 1.2-litre petrol engine.

Kia Stonic Pros and Cons
Kia Stonic Pros
- Good build quality – For the segment to which it belongs, the Kia Stonic offers appreciable levels of fit and finish and built quality.
- Refined and efficient engine – The 1.4-litre petrol engine of the Kia Stonic scores well when it comes to the perfect balance of performance, efficiency, and refinement.
- Spacious cabin – While the entry-level compact SUVs compromise a bit on space, the Kia Stonic trumps its competitors by offering segment-best rear legroom.
Kia Stonic Cons
- Could have done with more features – While the list of features in the Kia Stonic is pretty decent, there could have had more features on board to make it feel special over its rivals.
- Needs an update – Given that the Stonic is on sale for more than three years now, it is in a need of an update with more features and mild revisions in styling.
