Nissan Almera Overview
The most affordable model from Nissan Philippines lineup of passenger cars, the Nissan Almera serves as a compact sedan engineered for the masses, with the promise of offering the visual appeal and space from the sedans of one segment above. The Philippines car market continues to get the third generation Nissan Almera, despite the arrival of the fourth generation model overseas. The Nissan Almera is positioned below the Sylphy in Nissan’s lineup of passenger cars, and is a considerable alternative to even those who are looking for premium hatchbacks.
Nissan Almera History
The Nissan Almera was designed and engineered keeping in mind the requirements of the mass oriented car buyers, who wanted a maximum of a car in minimum of the price. While it was launched in many other global markets already in 2011, the third generation Nissan Almera reached the Philippines shores only in 2015.
Nissan was very quick to replace this particular version of the Almera with a new facelifted model within a year, which saw the compact sedan receiving a fresh new face consisting of revised headlamps, front grille, front and rear bumpers and mild revisions to the center console on the inside. The facelifted model was also slightly richer in features, however, it continued to retain the engine options of the pre-facelift model which it replaced.
Though many parts of the world have already received the all new much swankier and premium looking fourth generation Nissan Almera, the Philippines car market continues with the third generation version only.
Nissan Almera Highlight
The Nissan Almera has been crafted keeping the budget-oriented buyers in mind, who want a pocket friendly sedan cars with all the positive attributes of a traditional three-box car. It is neither too premium as a Honda City, nor it looks and feels a compromise in size and equipment like the Mitsubishi Mirage.
The Nissan Almera is being offered in a total of four different variants – 1.2 Base, E MT, E AT and VL AT. The range starting 1.2 Base variant has a smaller 1.2-litre three cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine sourced from smaller Nissan March (also known as Micra, and is available overseas). This engine makes 79 PS of power and 106 Nm of torque, and is coupled to a 5-speed manual gearbox.
The other three variants get a bigger and slightly more powerful 1.5-litre four cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine, which is available with a five speed manual gearbox in E MT and a 4-speed automatic gearbox in E AT and VL AT variants. This engine is capable of putting up a maximum power output of 99 PS and a peak torque output of 134 Nm.
The Nissan Almera is not a heavily enriched model in terms of features and equipment, but it manages to fulfill the basic requirements, with the top-spec VL AT variant getting kit like fog lamps, alloy wheels, 2-DIN audio system, leather upholstery, keyless entry with push button start, automatic climate control, multi-functional steering wheel, rear AC vents and driver seat height adjustment.
Nissan Almera Safety
In terms of safety, the Nissan Almera is armed with all the basic elements like dual front airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist and reverse parking sensors.
Nissan Almera Fuel Consumption
The most basic variant of the Nissan Almera, which is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine, returns a commendable 21.26 km/l of fuel efficiency, which betters even some of the smaller hatchbacks on sale. However, the other variants with a more powerful 1.5-litre petrol engine and automatic transmission return 14.5 km/l.

Nissan Almera Pros and Cons
Nissan Almera Pros
- Immensely spacious cabin – The Nissan Almera outclasses not only its similarly priced rivals, but also few cars from one segment above, when it comes to sheer amount of space for the back seat passengers.
- Easy to drive – The lightweight steering and decent driving dynamics make the Nissan Almera a convenient daily driver’s car for the urban environment.
- Comfortable ride quality – Thanks to the soft suspension setup, the Nissan Almera has a plush ride quality on offer.
Nissan Almera Cons
- Dated styling in and out – The Nissan Almera has been in the market for quite some time now, and that makes it look like a dated proposition, especially with the arrival of newer models as well as all new fourth generation Nissan Almera overseas.
- Hard plastics – The overall plastic quality of panels, especially dashboard, is not up to the mark, and the dull grey finish makes it look like it is built to a cost.
