Nissan Terra Overview

Positioned between the X-Trail crossover and the flagship Patrol Royale SUV, the Nissan Terra is the Japanese car maker’s first ever take in the premium midsize ladder-on-frame SUV segment. This category already has got some well-heeled competition in the form of Toyota Fortuner, Ford Everest, Mitsubishi Montero Sport, Isuzu MU-X and Chevrolet Trailblazer. The Nissan Terra is essentially a seven seater SUV version of its well-proved Navara pickup truck, and shares a lot of components, basic design language and interior cabin with it.

Nissan Terra History

The story of the Nissan Terra was originally written while the Japanese car maker was on the project of the Navara pickup truck. Nissan ultimately launched the Navara in South East Asian markets in 2014-2015, however, the project of development of Terra was still on roll.

After a much prolonged duration of development, Nissan finally came up with the all-new Terra in 2018, which is made in Thailand and exported to the rest of the South East Asian markets, including that of Philippines. The Nissan Terra was brought in and slotted above the more urban oriented X-Trail crossover, and offered a much more rugged and tough SUV over the former.

The Nissan Terra is still in its first generation version ever since its launch in 2018 in the Philippines car market.

Nissan Terra Highlight

Ever since its launch in 2018, the Nissan Terra is available in a total of five different variants – EL MT, EL AT, VE AT, VL AT and VL AT 4x4. Save for the top-spec VL AT 4x4, which comes with a four wheel drive system as standard, all the other variants do with a rear wheel drive configuration. Also, while a 6-speed manual transmission is offered in the base EL MT variant, all the other variants come with a 7-speed automatic gearbox as standard.

The sole engine option on offer for the Nissan Terra is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder diesel engine which it shares with the top-spec Nissan Navara pickup. Here in the Terra too, the engine makes a maximum power output of 190 PS and a peak torque output of 450 Nm.

The frontal styling, door panels as well as dashboard layout of the Nissan Terra has been completely lifted off from the Navara pickup, however, in the Terra, the interior cabin uses better quality materials and offers more comfort and convenience features. This premium midsize seven seater SUV comes with many necessary features for the segment, such as LED headlamps, touchscreen infotainment system, dual zone automatic climate control, push button start, AC vents for all three rows, cruise control and more.

Nissan Terra Safety

Nissan has equipped the Terra with exactly the same set of safety features which it has made available in its pickup trucks cousin, the Navara. The safety features on offer in the Nissan Terra are front, side and curtain airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, tire pressure monitoring system, vehicle dynamic control with limited slip differential (in 4x4 variant) and reverse parking sensors with camera.

Nissan Terra Fuel Consumption

The sole 2.5-litre diesel engine offered in the Nissan Terra returns a decent fuel efficiency of 12.2 km/l, if you factor in both overall city and highway driving conditions

Nissan Terra Pros and Cons

Nissan Terra Pros

  • Mammoth road presence – The Nissan Terra looks huge and intimidating, which gives it a noteworthy road presence of a giant proper SUV.
  • Spacious cabin – The Nissan Terra has three rows of seats on offer, and all the seats offer decent room for passengers.
  • Torquey engine – The diesel engine of the Nissan Terra offers an appreciable amount of torque down the rev range as well as in the midrange, thus making it an effortless SUV to drive even in lower city speeds.

Nissan Terra Cons

  • Could have done with more features – The overall interior cabin of the Nissan Terra, though well-built, doesn’t offer the premium appeal which a premium midsize SUV should offer at its price. Also, the cabin lacks a number of features for the segment to which it belongs.
  • Four wheel drive only in top-spec variant – The very capable four wheel drive is offered only in top-spec VL variant, and not in lower variants even as an option.
