Toyota Fortuner Overview
The Toyota Fortuner has been a legend in the SUV circuits in the Philippines car market. Originally introduced for the very first time back in 2005 in between globally successful models like RAV4 and Land Cruiser, the midsize positioning of the Fortuner proved to be a great formula for those who wanted a big and rugged SUV cars without splurging an astronomical amount of money. The Toyota Fortuner is currently in the facelifted avatar of the second generation version and still continues to be one of the highest-selling and most successful SUVs in the country right now.
Toyota Fortuner History
It was the year 2005 when the Toyota Fortuner broke the covers in the Philippines car market. The intimidating persona of the exterior design, as well as rugged and proven mechanical underpinnings from the Hilux pickup on which it is based, were reasons strong enough to pull the crowds towards it. Before the advent of an all-new second-generation version, the first-gen model of the Fortuner saw two facelifts, one each in 2008 and 2012.
The second-generation version of the Toyota Fortuner was launched in 2016, which saw the SUV receiving a completely new design language. While the SUV carried forward the big and intimidating persona, the overall design language became much sleeker and sophisticated. The interior cabin too was completely revamped, with the inclusion of new features onboard making it feel much more premium on the inside.
Come 2020, and the Fortuner underwent its tradition of having a facelift every four years again. The SUV received mild styling enhancements at the front and the addition of a few more pieces of equipment, making it as upmarket as possible.
Toyota Fortuner Highlight
The facelifted second-generation Toyota Fortuner has seen a variant rejig as well, which is now available in multiple options to choose from. Now there are two cosmetically different Fortuners to choose from – Standard and LTD – both of which differ on the basis of front styling as well as minute interior cabin highlights.
The Standard version of the Toyota Fortuner comes in four different variants – G MT, G AT, V AT, and Q AT. While the G MT, G AT, and V AT come powered with a 2.4-litre four-cylinder diesel engine (150 PS of power and 400 Nm of torque), the Q AT comes with a bigger and more powerful 2.8-litre four-cylinder diesel engine (204 PS of power and 500 Nm of torque). A 6-speed automatic gearbox has been made standard in all the variants, while the base G variant also gets an optional 6-speed manual gearbox. All of these variants get a rear-wheel-drive system as standard.
On the other hand, the more premium and even sleeker-looking LTD version gets a single variant, which is offered with both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive systems to choose from. The powertrain employed for the LTD version is the same combination of 2.8-litre four-cylinder diesel engine (204 PS of power and 500 Nm of torque) with a 6-speed automatic gearbox as in the Q AT variant of the Standard Fortuner.
Toyota Fortuner Safety
When it comes to safety features, the new Toyota Fortuner is packed with gills. The standard features across all the variants include dual front and knee airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, vehicle stability control, traction control, hill start assist, ISOFIX mounts for child seats, reverse camera, and front and rear parking sensors. The LTD version adds in panoramic view monitor, side and curtain airbags, pre-collision system, lane departure alert with yaw assist, and adaptive cruise control, with the four-wheel-drive variant of it adding in hill descent control as well.
Toyota Fortuner Fuel Consumption
The smallest car from Toyota Philippines is also the most economic car in its current lineup. The tiny 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, which is a naturally aspirated unit, ranks high in fuel efficiency levels as well, with the engine capable of returning maximum fuel efficiency of 20 km/l.
New Toyota Fortuner Fuel Consumptions

Used Toyota Vios Fuel Consumptions

Toyota Fortuner Pros and Cons
Toyota Fortuner Pros
- Authoritative road presence – The big dimensions and burly stance of the Toyota Fortuner definitely commands a healthy road presence and attention wherever it goes or even at standstill.
- Excellent mile-muncher – The commanding driving position, as well as abundant torque available across the rev range, makes it a tremendous vehicle to conquer long miles with ease.
- Reliable image – Over the years, the Toyota Fortuner has earned a stupendous reputation of being easy to maintain and reliable SUV, thanks to its proven and rugged underpinnings – a typical Toyota trait.
Toyota Fortuner Cons
- Low fuel efficiency – With great might and weight comes low fuel efficiency, and the Toyota Fortuner is also not left untouched by this philosophy.
- Lower features than the competition – Despite it being positioned as a premium midsize SUV, the Toyota Fortuner lacks many new generation features which are available in competitors, like a sunroof.
- Dated interior cabin – The interior cabin lacks the finesse and contemporary appeal that one expects from a vehicle of this price and class.
