2018 Geneva Motor Show: Mercedes-AMG GT Four-Door Coupe

Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe
Mercedes-AMG has unveiled the "first four-door sports car from Affalterbach," the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe which "draws directly on the legendary SLS and AMG GT models of success." According to Mercedes-AMG, the expansion of the AMG GT line with the 4-Door Coupe, "opens up the sports car segment to those looking for a vehicle for day-to-day use, but who are unwilling to go without the unparalleled performance of Mercedes-AMG."

Up front, the vehicle is unmistakably a Mercedes-AMG GT with its low hood and dominant front, but with its athletic, four-door fastback layout, the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe offers more space and even greater versatility than the "standard" two-door model. In addition, in true coupe fashion, the vehicle has frameless side windows and a windscreen that's inclined far to the rear. And even with the additional seats in the rear, the characteristic lines of the AMG GT models are not compromised. The tailored upper contours and broad shoulders point to the athletic, sporty orientation of the car, which is additionally emphasized by very pronounced rear wheel arches. The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe is available in three variants: The Mercedes-AMG GT 53 has a 3.0-liter inline-six turbo engine with EQ boost, with the internal combustion engine producing 429 hp and 521 Nm of torque while the electric "EQ Boost" adds an additional 21 hp and 249 Nm of torque, letting the vehicle accelerate from zero to 60 mph (97 kph) in 4.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 280 kph. The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 and 63 S variants both pack a 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine under the hood, with the one in the former producing 577 hp and 750 Nm of torque while the one in the latter puts out 630 hp and 820 Nm of torque. The performance figures of the GT 63 are zero to 60 mph (97 kph) in 3.3 seconds with a top speed of 311 kph while the GT 63 S achieves the same parameters at 3.1 seconds and 314 kph. For maximum efficiency, Mercedes-AMG has also equipped the V8 engines with the AMG Cylinder Management cylinder deactivation system. In the partial-load range, cylinders two, three, five and eight are deactivated, which crucially reduces the fuel consumption.

Another party trick of the V8 models are its active rear-axle steering. Up to a speed of 100 kph, the rear wheels point in the opposite direction to the front wheels via two electric actuator motors. As a result, the car turns into corners with significantly higher agility. Under everyday driving conditions, the driver also benefits from a small turning circle. At speeds higher than 100 kph, the system turns the rear wheels in the same direction as the front wheels, which noticeably improves driving stability. At the same time, the lateral force on the rear  wheels builds up considerably faster on changes of direction, thus improving the response to the steering. The driver can also rely on extreme rear-axle grip and high stability when changing direction quickly, without the usual tendency for the rear end to break loose. Though all three variants get a nine-speed transmission, the inline six-cylinder engine gets a dual-clutch one while the eight-cylinder variants has a multi-clutch technology semi-automatic gearbox. All AMG GT 4-Door Coupe models are equipped with the AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel drive. An electro-mechanically controlled clutch connects the permanently-driven rear axle variably to the front axle. "The new AMG GT 4-Door Coupe is the ultimate four-door sports car and the ideal ambassador for Performance Luxury," said Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer, Daimler AG. "It embodies a symbiosis of emotion and intelligence with breathtaking proportions and a puristic, surface-oriented design with sensuous shapes. It is both hot and cool at the same time." Delivery of the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 and 63 S 4-Door Coupes to its owners are scheduled to begin in early 2019 with the GT 53 following in mid-2019.
