2020 Audi A6 Allroad nabs Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is an independent organization that conducts tests on vehicles and rates their level of safety, free from the influence of any car manufacturer. The highest rating it can ever bestow on a car is the Top Safety Pick+, and the cars that receive this designation are among the safest cars that money can buy.
Very recently, the 2020 Audi A6 Allroad luxury wagon managed to earn the distinction.
In the IIHS’ recent round of testing, the A6 Allroad scored a "Good" rating in six areas of crashworthiness performance, namely: small front overlap collision evaluations on both the driver and passenger sides, moderate front overlap, side impact, roof strength and head restraints and seat performance. , Likewise, the A6 Allroad’s standard Matrix-design LED headlights with high beam assist and LED taillights with dynamic rear turn signals also returned a ‘Good’ ranking.
But what exactly helped this particular Audi car rise to the top of the safety heap is its standard forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking systems, both securing a "Superior" rating from the nonprofit safety body.
Both systems are a part of Audi’s Pre-Sense suite of driver assistance technologies that ‘take over’ the car to help prepare it for impact and protect occupants better. Once the Audi Pre-Sense detects an oncoming collision, it immediately sets into motion a series of protective measures including the tightening of the front safety belts, shutting the side windows and panoramic sunroof, and so on.
Aside from "seeing" the risk of collision posed by other cars, the Audi Pre-Sense can also perceive pedestrians and cyclists that come along the vehicle’s path, and activate automatic braking to prevent accident.
Also part of the Audi Pre-Sense driver assistance systems is a standard lane departure warning and a virtual top view camera system, which provides a 360-degree surround view of the outside of the vehicle and even assist with maneuvering in compact parking spaces.
The A6 Allroad follows the 2020 Audi A6 4-door sedan’s success, which also made Top Safety Pick+ back in February of this year.
