The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is a North American independent organization that tests and rates vehicles based on their level of safety. The group’s independent status means that they conduct vehicle tests free from the influence of any car manufacturer. So when they bestow a car with a Top Safety Pick+, their highest safety rating possible, you can bet your money (and your life) that it’s going to be among the safest cars that you can buy.
The 2020 Ford Explorer just so happens to be the latest car to receive this distinction from the IIHS.
The IIHS Top Safety Pick+ requires a car to have a ‘Good’ rating in all six basic crash tests (driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, head restraint, and passenger side small overlap front crash). In addition, the vehicle in question must also earn an ‘Advanced’ or ‘Superior’ rating for the front-crash avoidance technology category and an ‘Acceptable’ or ‘Good’ rating for the headlights category.
Thanks to the Ford Co-Pilot360 suite of driver assistance technologies (including Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking (with Pedestrian Detection, Forward Collision Warning, and Dynamic Braking System), Blind Spot Information System, Rearview Camera, Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane-Keeping System, and Auto High-Beam Headlamps), the 2020 Ford Explorer managed these barrage of tests with aplomb.
Ford Co-Pilot360 comes as standard equipment across the 2020 Ford Explorer range.
“Explorer is America’s all-time bestselling SUV and with that, our customers expect it to take their family on adventures everywhere – from school to our national parks,” said Lee Newcombe, Explorer marketing manager, Ford Motor Company. “This honor from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reaffirms the obsession of our entire team who work tirelessly toward the goal of helping our customers arrive at these places and everywhere else in between.”
