2020 Nissan Juke: The pros and cons

Nissan Philippines silently dropped the Nissan Juke from its lineup last year. Despite the fact, the first-generation vehicle still remains available in some dealerships, so for those who want to snap up a unit of this eccentric mini SUV, this may be the last time you can do so, as Nissan PH reportedly has its replacement model—the Nissan Kicks—coming in soon.

In case you’re interested in the 2020 Nissan Juke—a 2019 carryover—we share with you some of its pros and cons for your car buying decision.

Pros

1. Fuel efficient

The first-gen Juke’s bonnet hides a 1.6-liter, inline four-cylinder, DOHC 16V Twin CVTC engine that pushes out 114hp and 154Nm of torque. This is mated to Nissan’s signature X-tronic continuously variable transmission (CVT). This powertrain combo is known to deliver rewarding fuel economy, even with the performance-minded Nismo trim.

2. You read that right—it’s got a Nismo variant

Nissan PH brought the Juke Nismo into the country in 2018, giving the subcompact SUV the performance qualities to match its sporty looks. Although it carries the same turbocharged engine as the standard model, it’s been enhanced to deliver more power, along with some Nismo-approved appointments including Sporty Front Fascia with Redesigned Front Bumper, 17-inchSports Black Alloy Wheels, Rear Fascia Diffuser, and Rear Exhaust Finisher, to name a few.

3. That distinctive exterior

Of course, when all is said and done, the exterior is essentially what makes the Juke. Its unique retro-modern body shape is complemented by contemporary stylings including projector beam headlights, LED signature lamps and inimitably shaped front fog lamps that play a significant role in the prettiness of the front fascia--you're certainly going to miss them when they're gone.

4. Intelligent safety

The Juke features more than a few advanced safety systems in addition to the basics such as airbags and seatbelts. Some of these onboard safety features let Juke drivers monitor their driving and provide assistance when needed, courtesy of the Nissan Safety Shield Philosophy which consists of the following technologies: Intelligent Lane Intervention, Moving Object Detection, and Vehicle Dynamic Control.

5. It’s relatively inexpensive

The Nissan Juke has a starting price of PHP1.02 million. That might seem pricey at first glance, but consider what you’re getting. For starters, there’s the ultra-useful Nissan's Integrated Control (I-CON) system that lets you switch the driving mode depending on personal preference and road conditions. There’s the aforementioned advanced safety systems, touchscreen infotainment, futuristic cabin design, and more. All things considered, the Juke provides excellent bang for the buck.

6. An uber-cool infotainment/operating system

 

Aside from infotainment and driving modes, I-CON also manages the air conditioner, heater, and drive information for easy switching. It’s basically an operating system that enhances the driving experience overall, housing everything you need to control your vehicle in one, neatly packaged system.

Cons

1. Cramped backseat

The Nissan Juke is definitely NOT a family vehicle. Only small children will fit in the backseat. In addition, luggage space is also leaves much to be desired. If interior room is a big concern, consider the roomier Nissan X-Trail, and other larger subcompacts.

2. Styling is an acquired taste

While some people appreciate the Juke’s unique styling, there are many who abhor it. Also, the Juke’s distinct looks also calls a lot of attention, which doesn’t bode well for those with more introvert type personalities.

3. Not built for work

Some vehicles are built for work and play, but the Nissan Juke is not it. This is proven by the vehicle’s low towing capacity. This crossover will struggle to pull any extra weight.

Yay or nay?

Built more for style and less for utility, the Nissan Juke is obviously designed for young and hip professionals with some money to throw around. But an all-around vehicle it is not. So unless you’re the part of the specific target market for this quirky little driver, you may want to look elsewhere for your next vehicle.
