2021 Suzuki Ignis goes on sale in the UK

Suzuki dropped the Ignis nameplate in 2006, but resurrected it in 2016 just as subcompact crossovers started becoming all the rage. Well-received in Europe, the Ignis gets some much-needed midlife update that will see the model adorned with tweaks to the exterior, powertrain and tech.

Scheduled to launch in the UK this month, the 2020 Suzuki Ignis has now undergone some striking style upgrades, beginning with the new front 5-spoke front grille with trapezoid shape silver under garnishes that amplify the overall SUV character and unique style.

The front and rear bumpers have also been remade, while the slit-like C-pillar inherited from the first generation Cervo (SC100) remains, albeit tweaked for a more contemporary look. Blacked out A and B pillars, bumper garnish and clamshell bonnet—Suzuki signatures all—are present in the redesigned Ignis.

Suzuki describes the Ignis’ cabin design as conveying “futuristic urban styling and sweeping horizontal lines that convey breadth and a feeling of space.” The instrument panel, featuring a newly designed meter cluster, now displays a contrasting black and white look. New interior accent colors—Lazuli Medium Blue Pearl and Medium Grey Metallic—improve the stylish urban taste of the interior, as does the retooled instrument panel.

The power source is a new 1.2-liter engine that produces 82hp and 107 Nm of torque. An integrated starter generator adds 3hp and 50 Nm to the power yield, while a lithium-ion battery is also on board. Standard front-wheel drive models have a manual transmission, with CVT offered as an option.

Suzuki’s AllGrip four-wheel drive system is available to the top-of-the line SZ5 variant. The system comes with a Grip Control feature that automatically activates on slippery surfaces at speeds of less than 29 kmph and Hill Descent Control that the driver can switch on when the car is on an incline while traveling below 24 kmph in first or second gear.

Aside from the SZ5, the Ignis also comes in SZ-T (middle) and SZ3 (base) variants. Standard equipment include LED headlamps, 15-inch alloys, DAB radio with Bluetooth, air conditioning, rear privacy glass and body-colored side mirror caps.

The SZ-T uses 16-inch wheels and adds roof rails, wheel arch extensions, and rearview camera to the package, as well as an infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Features exclusive to the SZ5 include front fog lamps, climate control, rear electric windows, satellite navigation, and keyless entry and go, plus driver assistance systems such as weaving alert, lane departure warning, and dual camera brake support.

Unfortunately, we don’t have the Ignis available locally. The closest thing we have is the retro-looking Jimny, priced from PHP1,055,000 to PHP1,175,000.
