As the world's bestselling car for over 20 years, the Toyota Corolla series has sold a total of over 48 million units spanning 12 generations, and has been sold in more than 150 countries around the world.
At different times, the model has even appeared as a hatchback and station wagon.
Today, the flexible Corolla nameplate goes another transformation, this time in the form of a crossover SUV: the 2021 Toyota Corolla Cross.
Launching the Corolla Cross locally last August, it looks like Toyota Motor Philippines intends the car to be a mid-price option by limiting the variants to just two, priced at PHP1,285,000 for the bass 1.8 G CVT variant and PHP1,650,000 for the 1.8 V Hybrid variant—a PHP365,000 price difference.
So what features make up the difference in prices? And is the price gap justified? Check out the difference between the two 2021 Toyota Corolla Cross models below.
Headlights and daytime running lights on the top-ranging Hybrid variant come in LED, but the lower variants only get halogen projectors for the former and bulb-types for the latter. Rear combination lamps are LED on both trims, but the Hybrid’s come with added Line Guides. Also unique to the Hybrid are rain sensing wipers, a gun metallic front grille, and chrome door window frame molding. As for the wheels, the Hybrid comes with 18-inch sized tires, while the base comes with 17-inch rubbers.
Common among the two variants are LED fog lamps and auto-folding side mirrors, although the Hybrid’s rearviewers have a reverse folding feature.
Cabin-wise, the Corolla Cross boasts plenty of piano black surfaces, with an overall design that largely mirrors its sedan counterpart. Upholstery options include leather for the Hybrid, and fabric for the base. Infotainment is housed in a floating 8-inch touchscreen system (6.8-inches on the base variant), indicating the car’s upmarket leanings.
Speaking of upmarket, drivers get an 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat (6-way manual on the base variant), so finding the perfect position will be a cinch. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto users will have to stick to the top-of-the-line Hybrid, as it’s the only one with available connectivity to both systems.
Air conditioning is also different for both variants, with the Hybrid getting a dual-zone automatic control AC with a separate vent for occupants at the back. The rear of the Hybrid also comes with two USB sockets.
Other interior features common to both models include digital multi-info display, smart entry, push start system, and speed-sensing door locks.
Both of the gasoline and hybrid variant are powered by a Euro-4 compliant 1.8-liter gasoline engine, with the latter being aided by a 53kW motor. The gas engine gives off 138hp and 172Nm. Meanwhile the hybrid yields a combined 168hp (97hp gas, 71hp electric) and 305Nm (142Nm gas, 163Nm electric). Gear changes for both cars are handled by an electric continuously variable system, but the hybrid comes with three nifty driving modes (ECO, Power, and EV) designed to enhance driving efficiency.
The Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid comes with the benefit of the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) suite of driver assistance technologies, which include Pre-Collision, Automatic High Beam, Lane Tracing Assist (with Steering Assist), Lane Departure Alert (with Steering Assist), and Adaptive Cruise Control. Despite not having TSS, the base model still comes with some advanced safety courtesy of Vehicle Stability Control and Hill-Start Assist.
Standard safety features on both models include anti-lock brakes (with brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution), rearview camera, and seatbelts all around. Both models also have clearance sensors, but the Hybrid has more—six (two front, four rear) to the base’s two (rear only).
Each model has the same four standard colors to choose from: Red Mica Metallic, Attitude Black Mica, Metal Stream Metallic, and Platinum White Pearl Mica, which costs an extra PHP15,000.
