2022 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ awarded to Ioniq 5, other Hyundai models

Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 all-electric SUV was granted the 2022 Top Safety Pick+ award by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The significant achievement now gives Hyundai a total of nine 2022 Top Safety Pick and 2022 Top Safety Pick+ honors, giving the South Korean automaker a highly decorated lineup.

“As the industry navigates to an all-electric future, we are extremely proud to have been awarded an IIHS TSP+ for our all-new Ioniq 5, the first of three Hyundai EVs to be built on our Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). Safety is foundational at Hyundai and earning the IIHS TSP+ award demonstrates our ‘Safety First’ commitment to our customers,” said Hyundai Motor North America Chief Safety Officer Brian Latouf.

In order for a vehicle to receive a Top Safety Pick or a Top Safety Pick+ award, one must have Good ratings in all six IIHS crashworthiness tests — driver- and passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints. Additionally, a candidate must earn a Superior rating in front crash prevention technology tests or an Advanced rating in both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations.

Top Safety Pick winners must also be available with Good or Acceptable headlights. The “plus” designation is given to models that have Good or Acceptable headlights across all trim levels and packages.

Joining the Ioniq 5 as 2022 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ are other Hyundai models including the Hyundai Palisade, Hyundai Nexo, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Hyundai Tucson.

Meanwhile, 2022 IIHS Top Safety Pick award recipients include models such as Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai Sonata, Hyundai Santa Cruz, and the Hyundai Venue — all of which are equipped with specific headlights.
