The 2024 model year Hyundai Ioniq 5 has been awarded the Top Safety Pick+ (TSP+) award by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS).
Per the highway safety organization, the latest iteration of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 was given the highest possible safety designation — despite the more stringent testing carried out by IIHS — due to several passive and active safety features.
In order to qualify for a TSP+ award in 2023, a vehicle must earn Good ratings in the updated crashworthiness tests. In addition, Acceptable or Good headlights must be standard across all trims, and a front-crash prevention system that earns Advanced or Superior ratings in both daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations must be available.
“The updated Ioniq 5 was put through the new, more stringent version of the IIHS side test and earned a Good rating. The SUV (sport utility vehicle) is available with Good-rated LED projector headlights or Acceptable-rated LED reflectors. Its standard front crash prevention system earns a Superior rating in the daytime vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluation and an Advanced rating in the nighttime test,” commented IIHS President David Harkey.
On top of the aforementioned ratings earned by the 2024 Ioniq 5 on the IIHS’ crash avoidance and mitigation tests, the South Korean electric SUV got Good scores on all four crashworthiness tests, namely the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, original moderate overlap front, and updated side tests.
“The award-winning Ioniq 5 includes numerous standard safety systems and a host of technology and driver assist safety features not found on other EVs (electric vehicles). We are proud of the safety improvements made for the 2024 model year and will continue to innovate with our safety, design, and engineering,” said Hyundai Motor Company Global Chief Safety Officer Brian Latouf.
In the Philippines, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 also made headlines by featuring not just its safety features but its handy vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-load technologies (through a roving unit) during the 11th Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit.
There, Hyundai Motor Philippines also announced that the two units will come with a free installation of a 7.4-kilowatt AC charger.
