Perhaps the most simply-styled vehicles age the best. That's why cars like the classic Mini and the Mercedes-Benz W123, to name few, have been regarded as automotive design icons.
While the generations of the Suzuki Jimny off-roaders, including this fourth iteration, aren't in the same styling league as the mentioned European cars, their boxy and basic styling found the admiration of many. After all, they don't make cars as rectilinear as the Jimny anymore.
The charming Jimny comes in two lower GL and upper GLX variants, whose prices range from P1.095 to P1.215 million. Suzuki's AllGrip Pro four-wheel drive is standard in all varieties, so being an off-roader in the price range, the SUV is expected to come with an utilitarian yet decently-equipped interior.
The Jimny's boxy posturing translates into a roomy cabin that belies its compact exterior. The GLX trim features a leather-wrapped steering wheel, while the GL a urethane one. Both Jimny variants have a grab handle on the dashboard for the passenger to hold on to during rough off-roading.
On top of the dashboard sits a nine-inch infotainment screen which features navigation, Android phone mirroring, Bluetooth, and USB. The compass, and other meters that can display the Jimny's altitude, pitching and rolling angles, are reserved for the GLX.
Also a GLX-exclusive is automatic climate control, while the rest of the range gets manual cooling. Below the AC controls are the power window switches, which sandwich the buttons for the hill decent control (GLX) and traction control. Lower down, the USB port and power outlet can be found.
Meanwhile, it also seems that the Jimny is designed for camping in mind, as its two fabric front seats can be folded backward to create a bed with the rear perches. But when the sleeping quarters need to carry other items, the rear seats fold to create a 981 millimeter-long cargo area.
Two SRS airbags are fitted up front, while at the back, Isofix child seats mounts are available. The Jimny also provides three-point seat belts for all four occupants, and uses side impact beams for even more passenger protection.
While reversing, a camera displays the rear view onto the infotainment screen, while the Jimny's clutch and brake pedal have what Suzuki calls a pedal release system. The said pedals are designed to not crush the driver's legs during a collision.
Another safety feature is the Total Effective Control Technology (TECT)
in the Jimny’s body. The TECT's structure is said to efficiently absorb and disperse energy caused by a crash.
The Jimny is powered by a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated gas engine good for 101hp and 138Nm of torque. The five-speed manual is reserved for the base variant, while the rest get a five-automatic.
With a body-on-frame construction, the tiny truck is suspended by a three-link rigid axle suspension with coil springs.
