Chinese car brand
Geely made its return to the Philippines official yesterday
with the launch of the Geely Coolray, a compact crossover that's packed with features that aren't out of place of most midsize and even full-size luxury SUVs at a price point that isn't too far off of most subcompact cars.
While that's an attractive enough of a proposition to bring people to Geely's showrooms--which, incidentally, is opening its first one today at North EDSA--we couldn't help but wonder: Besides its power-for-the-peso offering in the Coolray, how can Geely Philippines bring people to its showroom if it only has one model to show off?
We asked
Geely PH General Manager for Sales and Marketing, Froilan Dytianquin, why this is so and according to him, they're just waiting for Geely's all-new models to come out.
"Most of the Geely models are nearing the end of their production life and we don't want to bring in something that will only be around for a short time," Dytianquin told CARMUDI PHILIPPINES. "Whereas the Coolray is fairly new, so that's why we brought it in first."
Known as the Geely Binyue in its home market of China, the Coolray is indeed quite new, having been launched just over a year ago in August 2018.
So it looks like we might have to wait for a couple of more years for
Sojitz G Auto Phillippines (SGAP), Geely's local distributor, to bring in other models to the market. That is, unless it changes its collective mind to bring in a few Geely models that were introduced in China recently, like the
Geely Binrui compact sedan, which was launched in August 2018 and shares the same
B-segment Modular Architecture (BMA) platform with the Coolray, or the
Geely Jiaji compact MPV, which was only launched in March 2019.
We'll just have to wait and see then.
