Akbayan partylist offers free transportation to spur voter registration
With an aim to spur more Filipinos to cast their votes in the forthcoming elections this year, Akbayan partylist offers free transportation to those who will be going to registration sites.
In a statement, Akbayan shared photos of their initiative, “Sakay Rehistro” that seeks to help voter registrants — especially those voting for the first time — go to the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) registration sites.
To note, the month-long extension for voter registration only has some eight days left to make sure that those who are eligible will be able to exercise their right to suffrage.
Akbayan claimed that its members and volunteers simultaneously conducted the initiative in in Isabela, Olongapo, Pampanga, Metro Manila, Laguna, Bicol, Cebu, Bacolod, Dumaguete, Basi and General Santos City. These people volunteers used their cars, jeepneys, motorcycles and other means of transport to shuttle voter registrants to registration sites.
“In Quezon City, Akbayan Youth gathered its ‘motorbike volunteer riders’ to ferry first-time young voters to the Comelec-designated registration areas,” the group mentioned.
Akbayan Youth Chair Dr. RJ Naguit said that "the extension of the registration must lead to increased voter participation and better elections."
"We have nine days left to register. Let's make the most of it. Huwag natin sayangin ang ating tagumpay sa pagpapa-extend ng voter registration (Let’s not our victory that led to the extension of voter registration). Our victory must lead to a more vibrant electoral democracy," Naguit said.
"By providing our voter registrants more transportation options that comply with health and safety protocols, we contribute to lessening the chances of massive voter disenfranchisement. Sa bawat registrant na maihahatid natin sa mga registration areas, ay isang mamamayan na siguradong makakaboto (Every registrant ferried to a registration area is citizen who will surely be able to vote," Naguit said.
