Following its announcement, Lexus unveiled the LM multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) at the ongoing Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition.
"The inspiration for the development of the new Lexus LM was the increasingly diverse lifestyles of customers in the luxury segment. This is where the development concept was born: creating a mobile space where customers can be their true selves. Our goal was to provide an environment that would allow busy individuals to relax in mind and body, free from the hustle and bustle of their daily lives ― a space to inspire positive thought and action,” said Lexus Chief Engineer Takami Yokoo.
While the exterior design of the MPV is definitely eye-catching (thanks largely to an evolved Spindle Body), Lexus pointed out that the focus of the vehicle is ride comfort and quietness, to create a mobile space where its customers feel they are in equilibrium.
To that end, the Lexus LM is designed with improved torsional rigidity. The carmaker said that the all-new LM’s torsional rigidity is 50 percent better than the current model — an achievement made through elements such as braces on the radiator support and rear underfloor, a straight rocker structure, and quarter pillar reinforcement.
Additionally, Lexus said that it thoroughly analyzed passenger body movement to ensure a naturally relaxed state for both the body and the mind no matter where the passenger is sitting. Special attention was also paid to reducing head movement and stabilizing the line of sight.
For the first time, Lexus features an “AVS Suspension with Frequency-Sensitive Piston Valve,” which combines an Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) actuator and a frequency-sensitive piston valve in the shock absorber. The system provides excellent ride quality regardless of speed, by meticulously dampening and reducing vibration over a wide range of frequencies.
The Lexus LM also features a “Rear Comfort” drive mode. This drive mode, Lexus explained, prompts the dampening force characteristics of the AVS to prioritize rear-seat comfort while integrated control of the gas pedal and brake reduces posture changes during acceleration and deceleration.
Per Lexus, special attention was also given to the quietness of the LM. Noise frequency bandwidths and noise sources were analyzed, resulting in a three-step approach to noise reduction: reducing generated noise (source noise), preventing noise from entering the vehicle (sound insulation), and reducing noise inside the vehicle (sound absorption).
Building on these improvements are features like Rear Climate Concierge and interior lighting with 64 illumination colors, including 14 themed colors and 50 custom colors.
As for safety, Lexus revealed that the LM MPV comes with features such as pre-crash safety, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert, Abnormal Driver Response System, and Proactive Driving Assist.
Available powertrain options for the all-new Lexus LM are a 2.4L inline four-cylinder turbo hybrid system with eAxle and a 2.5L inline four-cylinder hybrid system with E-Four/FF.
“The development team's passion and care went into every detail of the vehicle, from the thoroughly honed chassis and body, supple suspension and aerodynamic design, to the seats that suppress body sway, the high-quality tailored interior, and the numerous comfort features. We hope that our discerning customers will experience this 'Luxury Mover' that Lexus has lovingly created,” Yokoo added.
