Seating and space for seven people and their belongings, and car-like style, size, and ride comfort. These are the usual ingredients of an MPV.
And the market isn't lacking in compact and capacious seven seaters — one of them being the Suzuki Ertiga. This MPV's body measures 4,395 millimeters long, 1,735mm wide, and 1,690mm tall, which Suzuki said is underpinned by the Heartect platform also found in the Swift.
The Ertiga gets a 1.5-liter four-cylinder mill which produces 103hp and 138Nm of torque. Lower trims have a five-speed manual, while the upper specs come with a four-speed automatic.
On the topic of trims, the Ertiga is available in eight variants, which range in pricing from P738,000 to P938,000. The vehicle's pricing already gives it an edge versus its fresh MPV peers, and matches a few family-friendly used buys.
Suzuki APV (P593,000 - P813,000)
The APV — short for All-Purpose Vehicle — is another seven seater that stays under P1 million. Perhaps more interesting is the fact that the APV is still alive and kicking; this is virtually the same vehicle Suzuki launched in the 2000s.
Despite its age, the APV still appears to be capable with its eight seats, touchscreen infotainment, and 180mm ground clearance.
Considered to be the Ertiga's direct competitor, the Xpander vies for sales success with its striking design and safety features.
Wearing Mitsubishi's signature Dynamic Shield design, the Xpander carries Hill Start Assist, Active Stability Control, and a four-star safety rating from the crash tests conducted by the ASEAN New Car Assessment Program (ASEAN NCAP).
The Rush (as Toyota's entry-level SUV) indeed offers higher ride height, which goes along with body cladding. Its tall stance gives the driver a good view, while with the placement of the pillars, the sight from the side windows are just as clear as the front.
Its seven-inch touchscreen infotainment, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connections, make the model more car-like.
It's already known why getting Toyota vehicles, new or used, is a no-brainer decision. Another reason for considering the Innova is its 2.8-liter diesel engine, which puts out 171hp and 360Nm of torque.
The torquey engine, which will find the weight of seven occupants easier to shift, can be mated to a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic.
A brand-new Odyssey is beyond the Ertiga's price range, but not several used examples of the upscale, seven-seater minivan.
Once the Odyssey's automatic sliding doors open, passenger enter the cabin with its leather seats and a nine-inch rear entertainment system. The second row features fully reclining, fully cushioned captain seats with ottomans.
