Aside from Japan, the United States is Prius’ largest market. Debuting in the US in 2001, the Prius gained notoriety for its excellent emissions ratings and fuel efficiency. This year, Toyota USA is releasing the so-called Toyota Prius 2020 Edition (marketed as a 2021 model) to commemorate the hybrid’s 20th year in the US.
The Toyota Prius 2020 Edition is a special-edition, limited-production model that will only have 2,020 examples. It will be based on the Prius XLE FWD, with a couple of cosmetic upgrades. First off, the special-edition Prius will be offered in two special body color options: Supersonic Red or Wind Chill Pearl. Both of these colors come with a special black trim, visible on the B-pillars, side mirror housings, and on the rims. Toyota also equips the Prius with a body color rear spoiler and five-spoke 17-inch wheels that give the car an aggressive look.
The black theme carries through to the interior, with a blacked-out cabin and gear shifter, along with a Prius 2020 emblem on the special key fob and floor mats. As the limited-edition Prius is based on the XLE trim level, it gets most of its features from the standard XLE. These features include heated, eight way power adjustable driver’s seat, heated steering wheel, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality, adaptive cruise control, back-up camera, and universal garage door opener.
For the new model year, the 2021 Prius will now get the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 driver assistance system. This new system includes radar cruise control, blind spot monitoring, pre-collision braking with pedestrian detection, rear cross traffic alert, parking assist, lane departure warning, and bicycle detection.
The Toyota Prius XLE is expected to be priced at around US$30,000 (P1.5 million), so we assume the special 2020 edition will be priced a little over that price tag. Toyota will be livestreaming the unveiling of the new 2020 Edition today, May 18 at 11 a.m. AM EDT, or 11 p.m. in Philippine time.
