Audi takes DTM manufacturers’ crown even while season still ongoing
As early as the recent victory, German auto brand Audi has already claimed the manufacturers’ championship title in this season’s Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM)—even if there are still six races left.
The title is now in the bag after they had taken a 1-2-3 win at the recent leg in Nurburgring, at the 12th round of the season.
The three championship contenders dominating the race also came from their stable—Nico Muller and Robin Frijns of Audi Sport Team ABT Sportsline, and Rene Rast of Audi Sport Team Rosberg.
Frijns took the fastest time in all three sectors during the qualifying session in Nurburgring (which is a rare feat in the said race) in the process and taking his fifth pole position in the series—and the 19th-consecutive for Audi.
However, during the race, Muller proved he was faster as he used drag reduction and Push-to-Pass on the seventh lap, overtaking Frijns. On that point, Muller continued to pull away and built an 11.8-second lead and 19.5 seconds over Rast, after crossing the checkered flag.
Muller’s top podium triumph was his fifth for the season.
Rast, though commending the Audi Sport Team ABT Sportsline for its success over the weekend, said that Audi Sport Team Rosberg “will continue to mount its challenge in the remaining six races.”
Aside from the trio, Audi’s other entry—Ferdinand Habsburg of customer team WRT Team Audi Sport—showed stunning performance in Nurburgring by finishing in sixth. Habsburg was second in qualifying and was placed alongside Frijns on the starting grid.
Meanwhile, Audi Sport Team Phoenix also scored points with both its drivers Mike Rockenfeller finished seventh and Loic Duval in ninth.
The remaining four DTM races is slated in Zolder, Belgium, on October 9-11 and on October 16-18 and last two rounds will be held in Hockenheim, Germany on November 6-8.
