Audi USA unveils 'spacious and dynamic' A3 and S3
As Audi Sport previewed the hot RS3, Audi USA presented its tamer versions: the A3 and S3. The American arm of the German brand said these cars are "more spacious, more powerful, and more dynamic than ever."
An increase in length, width, and height creates a more spacious interior for both models, Audi said.
The S3, sitting below the RS3 in the range, is now 0.8 inches wider and 1.6 inches longer than its predecessor, giving the S3 a more substantial appearance, the German marque added.
The S3 wears an RS-inspired look with rhombus pattern Singleframe grille design and wider air dams. Around the rear, authentic quad exhaust tips provide a louder exhaust note as well as street cred. An optional Black optic package includes black exhaust tips and a black roof.
Under the hood of the A3 is a two-liter turbocharged four-cylinder TFSI engine with 201hp and 320Nm of torque. The seven-speed dual-clutch S-tronic transmission promises lightning-quick shifts, while exhibiting both efficiency and performance.
For the first time on the A3 models, a standard 48-volt mild-hybrid (MHEV) system provides boost off the line, and torque fill during low engine speeds, while allowing the car to coast with the engine off in many driving situations.
Power and torque are rated at 306hp and 400Nm from the S3's two-liter turbo, with zero to 100kph done in only 4.5 seconds.
Further pushing the "dynamic" part of the claim is the lowered S3 suspension, which sits 15 millimeters lower than the A3 models, while an available S sport suspension with damper control provides adjustability through the Audi Drive Select modes.
By changing oil flow to the dampers, the suspension immediately adapts to the condition of the road and driving behavior in just a few thousandths of a second. A new dynamic handling control unit links Quattro all-wheel drive to the Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and the aforementioned slick suspension for a "more spirited driving experience," Audi added.
The new, streamlined body on both the A3 and S3 is said to have a paneled underbody, and improved exterior mirror design that reduces air resistance.
To amplify the sport quotient on the S3, an upgraded braking system provides increased stopping power with large 14-inch front brake discs, while all four brake discs are internally ventilated, providing increased cooling for optimum performance.
Inside, the S3 swaps the standard A3's tiller for a flat-bottomed one, and the seats for one with more bolsters.
