Bentley has set a new — however unofficial — record for hill climb with a trailer at Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Using the Bentley Bentayga Extended Wheelbase (EWB), the company completed the hill climb towing a 2.5-tons of straw in one minute and 21 seconds.
As if it was impressive enough, the record for the ascent was completed on second-generation renewable fuel made from agricultural waste straw.
For safety reasons, the run was completed ahead of the start of the Festival of Speed, during the build phase of the event — making the record time unofficial.
According to Bentley, the 2.5 tons of straw hauled to the top of hill is enough to create 1,100 miles (1,770 kilometers) worth of fuel that the Bentayga EWB can run on without modification. “The second-generation biofuel conforms to the global EN228 standard for gasoline, meaning it’s a straightforward replacement for normal pump fuel,” the company explained.
The Ifor Williams trailer that the Bentley Bentayga EWB carried needed light modifications for the run, including a bolted frame to secure the straw load and increased tire pressures.
Following the climb, both Bentley Bentayga EWB and its trailer were put on display in the Cathedral Paddock at the Festival of Speed, while a short film covering the run was shown during the event.
To note, the new Bentley Bentayga EWB was acclaimed for its dynamic abilities — particularly on performance, ride and handling despite having a lengthened wheelbase.
Powering the Bentley Bentayga EWB is the 4.0-liter, 32-valve dual twin-scroll turbocharged V8 gasoline engine mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The aforementioned powertrain can deliver as much as 535 horses and 770 Newton-meters of torque. It also allows the vehicle to reach a top speed of 290 kilometers per hour (kph) and jump to 100 kph from standstill 4.6 seconds.
Further, Bentley shared that the Bentayga EWB comes with an electronic all-wheel steering and Bentley Dynamic Ride as standard. It can be recalled that Bentley first introduced the electronic all-wheel steering on the new Flying Spur.
Meanwhile, the Bentley Dynamic Ride – the world’s first electric active roll control technology — instantly counteracts lateral rolling forces when cornering and ensures maximum tire contact to deliver cabin stability, comfort and handling.
Bentley started the production of the Bentayga EWB in Crewe late last year.
