Best Manual Cars You Can Drive in 2017

Manual cars may not be having the time of their lives these days, but that doesn’t mean they’re in a total state of ruin. Yes, the automatics will be the standard transmission in the future, but no — we’re not giving up on manuals anytime soon.

In fact, we’re even encouraging you to drive manual cars right now. We know they aren’t practical and convenient for our traffic-infested roads, but we still like to drive them because they’re fun, cool, and more tactile on the road.

And if you agree with us, then you’re in luck—there are still a handful of manual vehicles that are available in the market today. Here are our top 6 choices:

Subaru WRX STI 2017 (starts from ₱ 2,498,000)

This high-performance variant of the Impreza line-up lives up to its name. Impressive and now more refined in performance, WRX actually stands for "World Rally eXperimental" or "World Rally Cross”, while STI means “Subaru Tecnica International.”

The WRX STI version is an immensely popular car in street and drag racing. Moreover, this vehicle -- together with the Subaru BRZ -- is a huge favorite of the Fast and the Furious franchise. In fact, either one or both of these cars have appeared in most of its series.

Now with 2.5L Turbo-Intercooler High-Boost 4-Cylinder Boxer Engine and SI-Drive Technology, this Symmetrical AWD System offers great suspension and high-performance power that allows you to drive through diverse terrain.

Ford Fiesta Hatchback 2017 (starts from ₱ 755,000)

Ford Fiesta hatchback may be marketed by Ford as a supermini, but it’s far from “mini” when it comes to performance. Known for its excellent handling, superb agility and versatility, this car doesn’t also slouch in the safety department as well.

In fact, it’s the first minicar to ever achieve the Top Safety Pick by the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) based on front-, side- and rear-impact crash testing and roof-strength.

The Fiesta comes with either a 1.0L EcoBoost or a 1.5L gasoline engine, with your choice of 5-speed manual or 6-speed PowerShift transmission.

This subcompact hatchback may be entry-level in its class, but don’t be fooled by its unassuming stance—the Chevrolet Spark can deliver well, especially for those who are buying their first new car.

It may not dazzle you with spectacular performance and impressive features, but it’s more than enough to satisfy you if you need a decent, dependable car for daily transport.

Here’s a trivia for you: Its concept car was featured in the Michael Bay movie Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen as Skids.

The Spark comes with a 1.4L engine that comes with either a 5-speed manual or CVT for its transmission.

It doesn't really matter whether you call it Honda Jazz (local name) or Fit (global name), since this five-door, front-engine, front-wheel Mini MPV will always be one of the easiest cars to drive on the road. Now with a fresher style, Honda has announced its goal of expanding its reach by targeting the younger generation.

The Honda Jazz is well-known for its reliability and very accessible cabin, and it still lives up to its reputation even after three generations. Its 1.5L chain-driven in-line 4-cylinder 16-valve engines with i-VTEC is paired with either a 5-speed manual or automatic, making it more fun to drive on the road.

They say age comes with wisdom, and this certainly proves true for Mitsubishi Mirage. This vehicle has gone through six generations already, and while the hatchback version doesn't really appeal to us, its sedan version -- the Mirage G4 -- has caught our eyes on numerous occasions.

Now with a refreshed, better-looking exterior and comfortable interior, the Mirage G4 has a smoother engine, good fuel economy, roomy cabin, a large trunk space, and a good ride compared to its predecessors. And while it still has a lot more room to grow, we think it deserves to be here just because of the commendable improvement it has made in recent years.

The Mirage's 1.2L 3-cylinder MIVEC engine can be paired with a manual or CVT, and just like before, its price tag will always be its most attractive feature.

  • Mitsubishi Mirage G4 GX 1.2 MT - ₱ 573,000
  • Mitsubishi Mirage G4 GLX 1.2 MT - ₱ 650,000
  • Mitsubishi Mirage G4 GLS 1.2 MT - ₱ 755,000

Named by J.D. Power and Associates as the “Most Dependable Sub-Compact Car in 2008”, the Hyundai Accent is a great combination of performance, comfort, practicality, utility, and yes—attractiveness.

The Hyundai Accent has always been our go-to car when it comes to recommending a balanced vehicle. And it has gotten better over time. Now with a more quiet interior, it now offers a better passenger space and backseat room to fit in more people.

This car offers a 1.6L diesel engine with VGT, or a 1.4L gasoline engine with CVT that can be paired with either a 6-speed manual or CVT type transmission.
