Best Selling Cars in the Philippines 2016 - So Far

The Philippine automotive market has plenty of reasons to celebrate this year, as it is well on its way to exceed its 2016 target of selling 370,000. As of the end of August, automotive sales have already reached 229,919 units. What’s interesting about this year is that each of the monthly sales numbers from 2016 have so far exceeded those from the previous year, with August posting largest increase at 40 percent, achieving 32,472 units compared to last August’s 23,181.

With regards to the car manufacturer ranking in terms of sales, Toyota Motor Philippines sits pretty at the top of the heap, which it has held on to since 1999. TMP takes a lion’s share of the market with 43.48 percent. Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation holds on to a distant second at 17.58 percent. At third place with a 9.72 percent market share is Ford, while Isuzu and Honda rounds up the top five with 7.55 percent and 6.30 percent market shares, respectively.

So what are the top selling cars of 2016 so far? Without further ado, here they are:

1. Toyota Vios

With 13,900 units sold from January to May 2016, the Philippines’ perennial bestseller remains a popular choice for private car and taxi fleet owners alike. It’s no mystery how the Toyota Vios has captured both markets, as there lies a stark difference between its high end and low end models that a wide range of buyers appreciate, from the budget-conscious to those with plenty of disposable income. Now on its third generation, the four-door subcompact sedan comes in a choice between the upgraded 1.3-liter and 1.5-liter Dual VVT-I engine that’s paired with either a 5-speed manual or CVT transmission with Sequential Control.

In the Philippines, when it comes to vans, the Toyota HiAce is the name to beat. Thanks to its redesign in 2004, the HiAce has become the prime pick for vans, earning the trust of government, fleet, and private buyers alike. So popular is this Toyota van that it has spawned so many imitators, most notably from the Chinese automotive market. Selling a total of 8,044 units for mid-2016, the latest model comes in a choice between a 2.5-liter and 3.0-liter engine available with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic gearbox.

4. Toyota Wigo

With three Toyota vehicles in the top five, you’re probably starting to understand the firm grasp that the Japanese auto maker holds over the Philippine vehicle market. First released locally in 2014, the Wigo didn’t waste any time bagging CAGI’s Best Micro Car of the Year Award for 2014 – 2015. This compact Toyota vehicle runs on a deceptively minute 1.0-liter engine and is mated to either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. The Wigo was designed to dethrone Mitsubishi’s popular city car the Mirage, and it sure looks that it has managed to do so, selling a total of 6,020 units sold, compared to the Mirage’s 4,950.

5.  Mitsubishi Montero Sport

It seems that the ‘sudden unintended acceleration’ scare that the Montero Sport endured for much of 2015 did little to dampen this year’s sales numbers, as the vehicle sold an impressive 5,870 units for the first half of 2016 and situate itself comfortably at the fifth spot. 2016 marks the release of the midsize SUV’s third generation, and the vehicle now features an all-new 2.4-liter 4-cylinder DOHC 16V MIVEC diesel engine. A choice between a 6-speed manual and 8-speed automatic with Sports Mode is available for the transmission.

These replace the RZ4E-TC engine of the previous version. Transmission comes by way of either a 5-speed automatic or manual, but the latter definitely the better performing of the two, fuel economy-wise. As of mid-year, this Isuzu SUV has managed to move 5,274 units.

Its numbers exceeded 10,000 at the end of the year during its heyday. Still, at 4,258 at the halfway mark, the Innova’s numbers are nothing to scoff at.
