BMW revealed that the X5 and X6 new received new powertrains as part of the extensive updates to help the former maintain its worldwide market leadership in its segment, and the latter, secure its position ahead of competitors.
The German automotive marque said that the BMW X5 and BMW X6 can be had in either a 3.0-liter gasoline powerplant, a 3.0-liter diesel-powered mill, or (for the range-topping variants) a 4.4-liter V8 gasoline engine. The said power units are mated to a new eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, complete with gearshift paddles on the steering wheel.
The 3.0-liter gasoline engine makes as much as 381 horsepower (hp) with 520Nm of torque while the 3.0-liter diesel engine puts out 298 horses with 670Nm of pulling power. As for the 4.4-liter V8, it pushes the envelope with 530hp and 750Nm.
Further, BMW shared that all the drive units now feature 48-volt mild hybrid technology. This across-the-board application of electrification comes in the form of an electric motor integrated into the transmission. The electric motor generates 12 horses and 200Nm of torque.
Additional upgrades bestowed to both the BMW X5 and the BMW X6 include a host of exterior and interior updates.
The two premium vehicles get an updated kidney grille as well as new headlamps.
Standard on the BMW X6 and optional on the BMW X5 is the M Sport appearance package, which comes with a kidney grille with double bars and an “M” logo, M exterior mirror caps in Black high-gloss, exhaust system tailpipe trim in the hallmark M quad-pipe style, and a rear spoiler in Black high-gloss for the BMW X6 M60i xDrive.
Further, the premium automobiles now come with a modern cockpit featuring the all-digital BMW Curved Display, which combines a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch infotainment system. Additionally, the instrument panels of both vehicles sport leather-like Sensafin-finished appliques, new ambient lighting, additional touch-sensitive surfaces on the control panel on the center console, and a newly designed gear selector lever.
According to the Munich-based brand, the seats of the BMW X5 and the BMW X6 can be optioned Sensafin surfaces. Also available are BMW Individual Merino extended leather upholstery, BMW Individual full Merino leather upholstery, active seat ventilation, and a massage function.
Opting for the Comfort Package will give would-be owners panel heating and a “thermo” function for the cup holders, the Sky Lounge panoramic glass sunroof illuminated by LED units, glass applications for selected controls, the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System, and the newly designed Travel & Comfort System.
The upgraded BMW X5 and BMW X6 will be built at the BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the United States and will be ready for their global debut by April 2023.
