BMW to debut iX and i4 EVs in US on June 1

Following the announcement of the company’s plans of cutting its CO2 emissions by 200 million tons in 2030 and its aim to aggressively increase its EV offerings, BMW is set to debut two fully electric vehicles in Los Angeles on June 1.

The BMW iX Sports Activity Vehicle and BMW i4 Gran Coupé will make their North American debut during two media events on the said date. The events will happen on BMW’s two-story, gallery-inspired exhibit dubbed “Space” which will be located at The Grove in the heart of Los Angeles.

Here, the German carmaker will showcase the latest evolution of BMW performance, innovation, and design. The newest BMW M vehicles, Motorrad bikes, and a few Mini models will be on display.

“The debuts of the BMW iX and i4 are only the beginning. We wanted to do something special to introduce these new vehicles, which is why we’ve created a brand platform in one of the most important electric vehicle markets in the world,” said BMW North America marketing VP Uwe Dreher.

“But Space by BMW will go beyond just vehicle debuts and displays. We will have a full schedule of programming and events which will create opportunities to engage and connect with consumers,” he added.

Bringing together the company’s latest developments in the fields of electrification, connectivity, design, and services is its flagship EV — the fully electric BMW iX Sports Activity Vehicle.

BMW said that the iX will feature a range of 300 miles and will run using two high-efficiency electric motors, giving the EV SUV a maximum power output of around 500hp. It can speed from zero to 100 in under five seconds says the automaker.

The charging technology of the BMW iX enables DC fast charging at up to 200kW and can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in under 40 minutes.

In addition, the BMW iX will be one of the company’s greenest cars and will be using a battery that is made with 30 percent secondary aluminum and up to 50 percent secondary nickel. The batteries are designed as part of a long-term resource cycle and allow for a very high recycling rate.

The BMW iX is also said to feature an intelligent grille that has a “self-healing effect.” In a 2020 press release about the new BMW iX design, the company said that it “can repair minor scratches, for example — within 24 hours at room temperature or through a five-minute supply of warm air.”

BMW’s fully electric four-door Gran Coupé, the BMW i4, also looks to wow the audiences in the upcoming event.

According to BMW, the i4 will be made available in various models including a BMW M performance trim. The variants are said to cover a range of up to 590km.

Power output tops at 530hp, allowing the BMW i4 to speed from zero to 100kph in around four seconds.

BMW said that both the BMW iX and the BMW i4 will be the first two models in the company’s lineup to feature the iDrive 8, the newest iteration of BMW’s driver-passenger-vehicle interface. The iDrive 8 will focus on voice and dialogue-based interaction using natural language and touch operation via the BMW Curved Display.

The BMW iX is slated to arrive in the US market early next year. On the other hand, BMW will be releasing more information about the BMW i4 in June, most likely during the event where the two EVs are to make their debut.
