BUYER'S GUIDE: 2018 Suzuki Swift

Subcompact hatchbacks should be on your list if you're looking for a vehicle that could easily drive through the urban jungle. The dimensions of these type of cars are ideal when you need to tackle tight city streets. Moreover, the power-to-weight ratio of subcompact hatchbacks enable these vehicles to have a relatively more frugal engine. Suzuki Philippines is among the local manufacturers that offers a subcompact hatch in its model lineup. In fact, Suzuki has just launched the all-new 2018 Swift in the Philippine market. It is set to rival the likes of the Mazda2 hatch, Mitsubishi Mirage, Chevrolet Spark, among others. Here's an overview of the notable features of the all-new Suzuki Swift.

Specification

The 2018 Swift is available in three variants with a starting price of PHP755,000 for the base GL MT variant. The mid variant, GL CVT, is priced at PHP799,000 while the top-of-the line GLX CVT has a sticker price of PHP899,000. For this Buyer's Guide, I'll be using the top GLX CVT variant as main reference in highlighting the all-new Swift's features. The Swift is powered by a 1.2-liter gasoline engine that delivers 82 hp and 113 Nm of torque. The engine is connected to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). In terms of dimensions, Suzuki's subcompact hatch measures 3,840 mm long, 1,735 mm wide, and 1,495 mm tall along with wheelbase of 2,450 mm. The dimension of the all-new Swift is shorter and lower as compared to its predecessor. Despite this, the all-new Swift's cargo space is 265 liters, which is 54 liters more than the outgoing model.

Exterior

The exterior of the all-new Swift looks more composed as compared to its predecessor. It's as if this Swift is the more mature or confident version of the older model. The fascia of Suzuki's hatch features a wide honeycomb grille along with LED headlights, a bold bumper, and wrap-around windows. Turning to the side, the Swift is characterized by straight lines as well as blacked-out pillars. The rear, on the other hand, has distinctive LED taillights, a large bumper, and a spoiler. The Swift is finished off with a set of 16-inch alloy wheels.

Interior

The interior of the all-new Swift features a black theme along with silver accents as seen on the door panels, dashboard, and center console. The cabin is pretty much straightforward, which would be a welcome sight to those who want less clutter in the interior. It features a D-shaped (or flat-bottom) steering wheel that's integrated with audio and phone controls. The Swift also gets a white-on-black instrument cluster for easy readability, automatic air conditioner, and an eight-inch infotainment system. In addition, the vehicle got several storage space for small items such as tumblers, water bottle, etc.

Space

As said earlier, the all-new Swift has a cargo space of 265 liters, which is 54 liters more that the outgoing model. With this number, you can easily fit either up to two mid-sized luggage bags or four overnight bags, among others. In case you're wondering, this vehicle can accommodate up to five occupants.

Safety

Safety-wise, it is equipped with dual front airbags, anti-lock brake system (ABS), reverse camera, side impact door beams, parking sensors, Isofix child seat, among others. Suzuki added that the all-new Swift has a light, impact-absorbing body construction, which is said to efficiently absorb and disperse the energy in the event of a collision.

Our Verdict

The all-new 2018 Suzuki Swift is a vehicle worth considering if you're looking to get a car that's ideal in the urban jungle. Aside from its diminutive dimensions and all-new design, the Swift is also packed with a bunch of safety features. Considering all the points mentioned, we think that the 2018 Swift can competitively challenge the local subcompact hatch segment.
