Most Filipinos, especially those living in Metro Manila, choose to buy a brand-new or used car because the daily city commute is stressful. It is stressful because Manila's urban jungle doesn't have an efficient public transport system. With that in mind, there are several cars available in the Philippine market which can be an ideal city car. Among the many choices, a subcompact sedan such as the 2019 Toyota Vios is an ideal car for the urban jungle. Here's an overview of Toyota's challenger in the subcompact sedan segment.

Specification

The 2019 Toyota Vios is available in six variants with a starting price of PHP659,000 for the entry-level 1.3 Base variant. The top-of-the-line 1.5 G Prime, on the other hand, is priced at PHP1,095,000. For this Buyer's Guide, we'll be using the top Vios variant so as to have an overview of the vehicle's overall package. The Vios 1.5 G Prime is equipped with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine that delivers 106 hp and 140 Nm of torque. The engine is connected to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). In terms of dimensions, the Vios measures 4,425mm long, 1,730mm wide, and 1,475mm tall along with a wheelbase of 2,550mm.

Exterior

The changes given to the Vios' exterior as compared to its predecessor is obvious. It has new design, which looks sharp, a bit sporty, and sort of friendly--thanks to its grille and bumper design, the Vios appears to be smiling at you. The Vios is fitted with halogen projector type headlights with daytime running lights. The side of the vehicle is characterized by sharp lines while the rear has wraparound taillights and a large bumper. To give the Vios a hint of sportiness, Toyota added a front and rear bumper skirt.

Interior

The interior of the Vios is simple yet functional. It has a three-spoke leather steering wheel with audio controls, a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and six speakers. In addition, Toyota's subcompact sedan has paddle shifters and two drive modes, which is Eco and Sport. The instrument cluster has a white-on-black theme, which make the numbers visible and easy to recognize. Not to mention, the top variant Vios comes with a push-start system and a wireless doorlock with speed sensing feature. Overall, the Vios' interior is decent considering its price tag.

Space

In terms of interior space, the Vios can accommodate up to five occupants. Of note, the rear seat can easily accommodate three average size Filipino adults that stand at around 5 feet, 5 inches. Beyond that, fitting in three individuals at the rear could be a bit challenging. On the other hand, you can easily put up to five overnight bags in the Vios' trunk.

Safety

The Vios is packed with several safety features such as driver and passenger airbags. It also comes with side, curtain, and knee airbags to help protect the occupants in case of a crash. Aside from airbags, the vehicle also has vehicle stability control, hill-start assist, anti-lock brake system (ABS), a security alarm, and immobilizer. As a whole, the Vios offers ample cabin protection.

Our Verdict

As said earlier, the 2019 Vios is one of the ideal vehicles for the busy urban jungle. Toyota's challenger in the subcompact sedan segment arguably has all the goods to maintain its position as the best-selling car in the said segment. The new exterior, simple yet functional interior, and decent engine, we can say that the Vios is one of the cars that should be on your list.
