The compact crossover has certainly evolved into one of the more competitive segments in the local automotive industry, and two of the more popular options available include the Mazda CX-3 and Honda HR-V. These models are poised to bring major prestige to the growing SUV lineups of both brands, but naturally, you’ll want to find out which one is best for you. Carmudi created this comparison between the 2017 Mazda CX-3 and the 2017 Honda HR-V to know the answer.
Exaggerated styling elements are apparent in both vehicles, obviously meant to mask their 'tall hatchback' shape--a common trait in compact SUVs. The Honda is the taller one, which benefits headroom but yields a slightly unpleasant roll on fast corners. That said, the Mazda shines instantly exterior-wise, thanks to the revolutionary 'KODO – Soul of Motion' design direction that permeates Mazda's current lineup.
Both vehicles succeed in achieving an impressively upscale appearance with their interiors, so you really can't go wrong with either choice if you're looking for more luxury at this price range. However, the HR-V is more spacious and has more legroom for rear-seat occupants--a big deal if your kids are already grown up.
Winner: Honda HR-VBoth the CX-3 and HR-V offer only one engine type. The Honda is equipped with a 141 PS (139 hp), 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine mated to either a six-speed manual or continuously variable transmission. Though an all-wheel drive is available in the North American option, for better or worse, we only get a front-wheel driver locally. The FWD and CVT pairing gives the HR-V a combined 11.9 km/l fuel economy rating.
Inside the CX-3's engine bay is a 148 PS (146 hp), 2.0-liter four-cylinder mill matched with a six-speed automatic transmission. Versatility comes by way of front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive options. It's the front-wheel version that's more efficient though, and at 13.2 km/l, the CX-3 is easily at or near the top of the compact SUV heap in terms of fuel efficiency.
Though the two vehicles share a lot of similarities on paper, each offer a unique experience behind the wheel. The CX-3 is certainly the sportier one, while the HR-V, though not notably quick, feels steady and composed in day-to-day driving.
Winner: Mazda CX-3The Honda HR-V and Mazda CX-3 have both been designed to succeed in modern crash test settings. The two vehicles also offer a limited range of optional electronic safety systems such as backup camera, traction control, and anti-lock brakes. Both have side curtain airbags. As for unique features, the CX-3 boasts a forward-collision warning system with automatic braking, adaptive cruise control, and rear cross-traffic alert. Meanwhile, the HR-V offers the one-of-a-kind LaneWatch blind spot monitoring system. Though the CX-3 offers more tech, safety-conscious urban drivers may prefer the LaneWatch for its practicality.
Winner: Both The CX3 and HRV are TiedThe price of both vehicles is practically in the same ballpark. The same thing can be said about the value they provide. Though it's too close to call, we pick the Honda for its utility, but if it's features and agility you're looking for, the Mazda CX-3 will be better suited to your needs.
