KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • How many variants does the MG HS and the Honda HR-V have?

Both crossovers are offered in two variants.
  • But which among the two makes is the better choice? We pit them together to find out.

    Exterior

As we briefly covered above, both crossovers sport a modern appeal. The MG HS boasts plenty of curves and contours giving it a sporty look while the Honda HR-V dons a boxy appearance with lots of straight lines and sharp angles.

At the fore of the MG HS is a chrome-trimmed stardust grille paired with a matte silver skid plate. The lower models come with halogen headlamps while the range-topping variant offers an all-LED lighting setup. All trim levels though do sport chrome accents on the fog lamps, the lower body side, and on the liftgate handle.

The Honda HR-V, on the other hand, features a sleek and stylish silhouette. The lower grade gets a black bar-type grille while the higher grade gets a black mesh grille complete with a sport-type front bumper and a sport-type front bumper spoiler. Both options also come with a full LED setup (although the lower model gets a black headlight extension while the top-tier model comes with a platinum one).

Overall, both the MG HS and the Honda HR-V are neck and neck when it comes to what they offer from the outside.

    Interior

The cabin of the MG HS comes with lots of leather. You can find them on the door panels, on the seats, and on the steering wheel. It also offers a 10-inch infotainment system with six speakers and digital 12.3-inch instrument panel.

Meanwhile, the Honda HR-V offers interior leather appointments only for the range-topping model. And while the eight-inch infotainment display is available for both variants, the base variant comes with a 4.2 instrument panel while the top-spec model comes with a seven-inch instrument panel.

With better interior amenities, this round goes to the MG HS.

    Engine

Engine-wise, the MG HS is packing a 1.5-liter powerplant. Paired with a seven-speed Twin-Clutch Sportronic Transmission, this setup makes 167 horses and 250Nm of torque.

The Honda HR-V, on the other hand, has a 1.5-liter engine mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The base model makes only 119 horses with 145Nm while the higher model, thanks to having a turbocharged powerplant, makes 129 horses with 240Nm.

The 119-horsepower (hp) engine on the base model is ideal for those using the Honda HR-V as their daily driver for going around the city while the 129-hp mill will be perfect for those who want more.

Despite its competitor having a more powerful output, the Honda HR-V offer more engine options to satisfy the needs of various motorists. On that note, we give this win to the Japanese model.

    Verdict

The MG HS and the Honda HR-V are tied in terms of winning rounds. That said, picking between the two would come down to personal preference that would suit one's needs.

Both the MG HS and the Honda HR-V are offered in two variants. The former is priced from P1,258,888 to P1,308,888 while the latter is offered from P1.25 million to P1.598 million.
