DPWH eyes to open BGC viaduct next month
The leadership of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said that the Lawton Avenue to Global City viaduct section of the Bonifacio Global City (BGC)-Ortigas Center Link Road Project is expected to be opened next month.
Upon inspecting the project Tuesday, DPWH Sec. Mark Villar claimed that the agency is now working at an accelerated pace to meet the completion target — the end of the third quarter this year.
Undersecretary for Unified Project Management Office (UPMO) Operations Emil Sadain shared that the deck slab of the main viaduct from Pier 13 to Pier 22 has already been completed, while installation of deck slab reinforcements at Pier 22 to Abutment 3 including median, sidewalk and parapet reinforcements are currently ongoing.
Aside from that, the DPWH added that the “construction of retaining and MSE wall for the 155-meter Approach 3 are also on-going” and the underground utilities of Meralco along 8th Avenue have already been relocated.
Sadain mentioned that despite the strictest community quarantine level covering the Metro Manila area, the DPWH and Persan Construction, Inc. (the contractor for the project) continued the work along the stretch of 8th Avenue from the Kalayaan Avenue intersection while “taking into consideration the construction health and safety protocols.”
When the Lawton Avenue to the Global City viaduct section is fully completed, motorists will be given direct access from Ortigas Center heading towards Kalayaan Bridge to Bonifacio Global City.
The full stretch of BGC-Ortigas Road Link Project — which is made up of the Kalayaan Bridge (opened last June 12) as well as the improvements at Brixton and Fairlane Streets, and the abovementioned viaduct — is expected to cut travel time between BGC and Ortigas Center from a one-hour trip to 12 minutes.
