MMDA Chairman Atty. Romando Artes said that the reopening was made "ahead of schedule" — with an initial target completion of October 2024.
“The DPWH was able to finish the flyover’s retrofitting works two months ahead of schedule intended to strengthen and prepare it for potential earthquakes, or the ‘Big One’,” Artes was quoted as saying.
Although opened to be used again, DPWH National Capital Region (NCR) Regional Director Loreta Malaluan said that there is still continuing work being done under the flyover.
Per MMDA Traffic Engineering Center, approximately 24,000 four-wheeled vehicles and 23,000 motorcycles utilize the flyover’s southbound lanes every day.
Relatedly, the Artes noted that other bridges in Metro Manila are also set for reinforcement such as the Guadalupe Bridge and the Magallanes flyover in Makati City.
“Rehabilitation works are ongoing on the Magallanes flyover but only during the night, and no closures have been implemented so as to minimize inconvenience to vehicular traffic,” said Artes.
He added that the Guadalupe Bridge’s repair is still in the planning stages as a temporary bridge must be constructed to accommodate passing vehicles.
