Estrella-Pantaleon Bridge to be opened H1 2021
The leadership of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) claimed that they will be opening the upgraded Estrella-Pantaleon Bridge come first half of 2021.
After a technical inspection Wednesday (January 6, 2021), Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar made the announcement, saying that motorists can use the widened and modernized bridge (that connects Estrella Street in Makati City and Barangka Drive in Mandaluyong City) by second half of the year.
Villar also claimed that the construction work is now more than 72 percent complete—8 percent ahead of schedule.
DPWH claimed that they have already completed all bridge substructure abutment works on both sides; piers on Makati approach as well as main bridge; as well as the V-shaped piers for the main bridge.
Aside from that, they are also done with the concrete pouring works for four segments of prestressed concrete girder on the Mandaluyong side and concrete pouring works for the first lift of box girder for the approach bridge on Makati.
The department claimed that the accelerated schedule was due to Villar’s instruction to the DPWH- Unified Project Management Office (UPMO) to proceed more quickly so that the bridge can be opened for public use earlier.
Villar noted that said that DPWH UPMO under the direction of Undersecretary Emil Sadain is doing all necessary measures to ensure quality standards and safety and to keep up with the pandemic-related challenges and backlog.
Meanwhile, Sadain said that their Roads Management Cluster 1 is currently working on the remaining civil works covering formworks and rebar installation in two segments of prestressed concrete girder in Mandaluyong side and two more segments in Makati side as well as for the second lift of box girder for the approach bridge in Makati side in order to complete the bridge.
Once opened, the public can expect traffic relief by providing additional fix link and alternative route crossing the Pasig River using a new two-way four-lane bridge with a total length of 506.46 meters and width of 21.65 meters, having 3-meter sidewalks on both sides.
Prior to this, the closure for the bridgework was deferred many times since 2018 and was finally closed January 2019.
The said bridge, which is part of the efforts to decongest EDSA, is funded by a grant from China.
