Subaru UK announced that the all-new European-spec Outback has achieved the maximum five-star overall rating in the 2021 European New Car Assessment Programme (EuroNCAP).
Thanks to the Outback's EyeSight driver assist technology, the crossover-wagon scored 95 percent in the Safety Assist performance. Subaru UK said that's the "best mark ever from a Subaru vehicle."
The Outback registered scores above the minimum requirement in all four-assessment areas. These areas are Adult Occupant, Child Occupant, Vulnerable Road Users, and Safety Assist.
Aside from the Safety Assist area, the Outback also attained the highest score in the Vulnerable Road Users test with 84 percent. Vulnerable road users are cyclists, pedestrians, among others. The Outback also registered the highest marks in the Child Occupant Protection in the large family car segment, with 89 percent.
"These results reflect Subaru’s reputation for building vehicles engineered to deliver the highest levels of safety," Subaru UK expressed. The Outback features the latest generation EyeSight, packed with a stereo camera prevention collision system that has an expanded angle view range.
The new image recognition software is now available with 11 standard safety functions: Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering Function, Emergency Lane Keep Assist, Speed Sign Recognition with Intelligent Speed Limiter, and Lane Departure Warning with steering wheel vibration.
The EyeSight's Lane Departure Prevention is said to recognize the dividing lines between grass and the edge of the road. The Pre-Collision Braking System has been updated to avoid collisions at intersections.
More of the Outback’s safety equipment suite includes Reverse Automatic braking, Subaru Rear Vehicle Detection, Rear Seat Reminder, and Multi View Monitors that reduce vehicle blind spots.
Outback also features Subaru’s Driver Monitoring System, Subaru’s face recognition technology that alerts the driver when feeling fatigued or distracted while driving.
Built on the Subaru Global Platform, the car's amount of high-tensile steel was increased to improve protection in frontal, side, and rear end collisions. The high-tensile steel also makes the family wagon lighter, and offers enhanced energy absorption and impact transmission.
The body has been substantially strengthened with a new structural frame, and the addition of beams and sub frames.
