Fastest Race Lap in F1 Gets Additional Point
The Federation International de’l Automobile (FIA) announced the comeback of a ruling that gives an additional point to whoever runs the fastest lap in each and every race of the Formula 1 Grand Prix.
According to the motorsport organization, the additional one-point system will start to be awarded in this weekend's Australian Grand Prix. However, the fastest lap point will only be awarded to the driver if he is within the top 10 finishers.
"A point will also be awarded to the Constructor of the driver setting the fastest lap," the FIA added.
Reports said that the latest ruling was first implemented back in the 1950s.
The FIA World Motor Sport Council made the adjustments to the 2019 Sporting Regulations during its meeting in Geneva last March 7 "subject to the successful outcome of an e-vote by the F1 Strategy Group and the F1 Commission."
The approval got the unanimous voting.
With the change made, the FIA said that there will be an additional 21 championship points that can be garnered over the course of the season.
