It was inevitable, really. At the recently-concluded Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach, California,
Ferrari revealed the drop-top version of its high-performance
Ferrari 488 in the
Ferrari 488 Pista Spider--
six months after the hardtop Ferrari 488 Pista's own revelation.
The Ferrari 488 Pista Spider is the
50th drop-top model from the Prancing Horse and sets a new benchmark for Ferrari for spider performance with an unprecedented
weight-to-power ratio of 1.92 kg/hp.
As expected, the Ferrari 488 Pista Spider is directly derived from the 488 Pista coupé which, in itself, adopts everything that the Italian carmaker learned from racing with the 488 Challenge and the 488 GTE racing series, from extensive weight saving solutions, engine and vehicle dynamics, and aerodynamic developments, resulting in the 488 Pista Spider that "offers the highest level yet of technological transfer from the track to a road-legal drop-top car."
Like the hardtop 488 Pista, the 488 Pista Spider has a central livery which runs the whole length of the car, expanding toward the rear where it finishes at the end of the rear wing next to the spoiler. Inside, Ferrari made use of
lightweight, pared-back components to keep the weight down so aside the generous use of carbon fiber and Alcantara throughout the cabin, the carpets have been replaced by
patterned aluminum foot plates and the driver's-side door handle is now a
simple strap.
The 488 Pista Spider has
new 20-inch diamond-finish alloy wheels with a
novel 10-spoke star-effect interpretation of Ferrari's traditional mid-rear engine berlinetta-style rims, while
one-piece carbon-fiber wheels which offer a
20-percent weight reduction over the standard forged alloys is also available as an option.
Lastly, like the 488 Pista coupé, the 488 Pista Spider is equipped with Ferrari's new lateral dynamics control system, the
Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer, "which makes on-the-limit driving more intuitive, controllable and predictable."
