First electric BMW M car tops i4 Gran Coupé range
BMW positions the i4 Gran Coupé as not just another big sedan.
The marque said the i4 GC "combines BMW’s fabled sporting prowess...a range (for) long journeys (combined) with the elegant design, spaciousness and practicality of a four-door."
When the i4 goes on sale in November 2021, it will come with two variants: the i4 M50 and i4 eDrive40.
The i4 M50 is the first fully electric car made by BMW's M tuning arm. It packs 544hp, all-wheel drive, and an estimated 510 kilometers of range.
The i4 eDrive40 drives its rear wheels with 340hp all the way to 590 kilometers.
A Sport Boost function, "for ultra-dynamic power delivery from the two electric motors" in the i4 M50, boosts torque output. With 795Nm, the zero-to-100kph dash is done in 3.9 seconds.
The i4 eDrive40 has 430Nm and does the same dash in 5.7 seconds.
BMW said the i4 is based on a flexible vehicle architecture tailor-made for an electric drive system. The chassis has a long wheelbase, wide tracks, and is made lightweight yet stiff.
Model-specific torsion struts, aluminium shear panel and front axle subframe, are fixed with the casing of the high-voltage battery. As a result of this body structure enhancement, drag coefficient is at a low 0.24.
A newly designed chassis technology using a double-joint spring strut front axle, and five-link rear axle underpins the new BMWs.
Wheel slip limitation, meanwhile, delivers outstanding traction and stability when the going gets "dynamic," BMW said.
For the i4 M50, model-specific adaptive M suspension, variable sport steering, M Sport braking system, and optional M light-alloy wheels are fitted.
Inside, there's luxurious premium ambience and smart use of interior space. Acoustic glazing, pre-heating and pre-conditioning, sport seats and sports steering wheel come as standard.
The center console has a modern-design control panel for the gear selector lever, as well as for the BMW Controller and function keys.
The large tailgate comes as standard with electric opening and closing, which provides access to the cargo area with a capacity of 470 liters. That can be expanded up to a maximum 1,290 liters with the seats folded.
Towing can be done, too, with an electrically extendable and retractable trailer tow hitch optional, for loads up to 1,600 kilograms.
Typical for a premium model, BMW said the i4 Gran Coupé offers a wide array of individualization options.
Driving pleasure and comfort can be enhanced by options such as seat heating and ventilation, Vernasca leather trim, and BMW Individual leather trim variants.
Adding to the upscale ambience are the instrument panel in Sensatec and leather variants, M Sport package Pro, ambient lighting, Harman Kardon Surround Sound System, and a large glass slide and tilt sunroof.
The i4 Gran Coupé also premieres the new generation BMW iDrive control/operation system, BMW added.
The touchscreen function of the new BMW Curved Display has been made clearer, and the upgraded BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is said to understand more natural dialogue.
A fully digital screen combines a 12.3-inch information display and a 14.9-inch control display. The display features advanced graphics, and a powerful software based on BMW Operating System 8.
