Ford looks to expand the Explorer nameplate by adding two new models to the Ford Explorer ST trim: the new Explorer ST rear-wheel-drive model and the new Explorer ST-Line series.
“We’ve taken Explorer, already the all-time best-selling SUV, and given our customers the chance to put the emphasis on the things they value most. For on-road performance and styling, our new rear-wheel-drive Explorer ST and new Explorer ST-Line are specifically designed to appeal to new customer groups with different adventure needs,” said Ford Marketing Manager Jeff Marentic.
According to Ford, the new Explorer ST-Line will feature a blacked-out grille, fascia-integrated dual exhaust tips, gloss-black “EXPLORER” hood badging, and unique black-out treatment for headlamps and taillamps. Additional aesthetic features include ST-Line scuff plates and premium floor mats. It will also ride on 20-inch machined aluminum wheels.
Inside, the ST-Line Explorer will have Ebony Black ActiveX-trimmed seats with Miko inserts, heated first-row seats, heated sport-style steering wheel, and red accent stitching throughout.
Other in-car tech includes the 12-speaker B&O sound system, a wireless charging pad, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a 360-degree camera.
The 2022 Ford Explorer ST-Line also features standard driver-assist features such as the Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist+ technology, including evasive steering assist, intelligent adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, and voice-activated navigation.
Under the hood, the Ford Explorer ST-line will be powered by a 300hp, 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.
On the other hand, the rear-wheel-drive variant will be able to put out a maximum of 400 horses thanks to its 3.0-liter EcoBoost power plant, also mated to a 10-speed automatic gearbox.
“No two SUV drivers use their vehicles the same way, so our goal is to meet the needs of as many as possible. Four-wheel-drive capability is great if you need it, but if you don’t, you shouldn’t have to pay for it. These changes to the Explorer lineup were guided by what our customers told us they wanted,” explained Ford Explorer Marketing Manager Lee Newcombe.
“The ST brand has been very well received by Explorer customers since it arrived two years ago. With the addition of Explorer ST-Line, Explorer will offer the broadest performance-inspired lineup in the segment,” Newcombe added.
Ford’s 2022 models including the rear-wheel-drive and the ST-Line models will arrive in US showrooms later this year.
