The Ford Motor Company is recalling select units of the 2020 Ford Explorer, as the airbag fasteners on these units may have an incorrect torque.
If left unfixed, the fasteners—which hold secure the side airbag and/or seatback module attachments—could prevent or delay the airbag cushion from deploying and/or positioning correctly, increasing the risk of injury during a crash.
According to Ford, there have been no reports of accidents or injuries that may relate to the problematic fastener.
The affected Explorer vehicles belong solely to the 2020 model year and involves 2020 Ford Explorer vehicles built at Chicago Assembly Plant from Nov. 19, 2019, to June 4, 2020.
The recall also affects 2020 Lincoln Aviator vehicles built there from April 11, 2019, to June 8, 2020.
This action affects 491 vehicles in the U.S. and federal territories, 34 in Canada and three in Mexico for a total of 528 units in all.
Ford is preparing to notify affected owners of the safety recall, which has the reference number 20548, to bring their vehicles to their nearest Ford dealership.
Upon their vehicle’s arrival, Ford technicians will remove the front seatback panels from one or both front seats and verify the proper torque on the fasteners. Problem fasteners will be replaced at no cost to the owner.
The 2020 Ford Explorers in the Philippines are largely unaffected, as the units here are mainly manufactured at Ford’s Chongqing, China plant.
