Ford is giving the Explorer nameplate the all-electric treatment, giving its European customers a vehicle that is said to combine German engineering with striking American style.
While it’s still a mid-size crossover through and through, the all-electric Ford Explorer wears an exterior far-fetched from the Explorer we know here in the Philippines. It drops the traditional grille and instead wears a bold “shield” fascia.
The Dearborn-based brand has not confirmed it yet, but we’re guessing that underneath that hood — or shall we say bonnet — is a frunk. It also appears to ride on large wheels with a futuristic design.
Its ultra-modern cabin was designed to match its exterior. Further details are expected to be announced but according to Ford, the interior is finished with premium materials and features sculpted sporty seats and a sophisticated soundbar, usually found on concept cars rather than family vehicles.
On its dashboard sits a movable 15‑inch touchscreen infotainment system that can smoothly slide up and down to suit the driver and conceals a private locker storage space for valuables. There’s also a large compartment with a wireless charger that can fit two phones.
Advanced driver assistance systems include Assisted Lane Change and Clear Exit Assist.
“Explorer is a trailblazer for a new breed of exciting Ford electric vehicles. Steeped in our American roots but built in Cologne for our customers in Europe, it is road trip-ready for the big adventures and fully loaded with everything our customers will need for their daily drives,” said Ford Europe Model e General Manager Martin Sander.
The all-electric Ford Explorer will be built at the new Ford Cologne Electric Vehicle Center in Germany.
