GAC brought in a new variant of the GS8 sport utility vehicle (SUV) not too long ago.
Its arrival meant that the nameplate now has a four-wheel-drive offering aimed at Filipino car buyers looking for an elegant and luxurious go-anywhere vehicle.
But, does the GAC CS8 4WD have what it takes to compete against more established nameplates in the Philippines, or is it literally punching above its weight class? Let’s find out how this SUV stacks up against the competition.
The Mitsubishi Montero Sport is one of the first few SUVs we think of when we talk about machines with 4x4 drivetrains. Not only is it a beefy SUV but it also has that rally-tested DNA, which we’re now seeing a revival of.
Powering the Mitsubishi Montero Sport is a 2.5-liter diesel powerplant mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with Sports mode. It also packs a Super Select 4WD-II with off road mode.
The said setup makes approximately 178 horsepower (hp) and 430 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque.
Notable features offered by the Mitsubishi Montero Sport include its strong and rugged exterior design with the Dynamic Shield front fascia as well as its suite of decent automotive technologies like its LCD instrument cluster and eight-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Another segment staple is the Nissan Terra.
Owners of the Nissan Terra are treated to a 2.5-liter mill married to a seven-speed automatic transmission with manual mode. Its drivetrain is a shift-on-the-fly part-time 4WD with 2H, 4H, and 4L driving modes.
The abovementioned arrangement can put out as much as 187 horses and 450Nm of torque.
Unique to the Nissan Terra is its 11-inch flip-down rear monitor that is complemented by a host of advanced in-car technologies like its eight-inch infotainment system and Bose-branded sound system.
Not to be outdone is the Toyota Fortuner. This SUV packs a 2.8-liter engine mated to a six-speed automatic. It also has a 4x4 drivetrain with differential lock and auto differential disconnect features.
The said setup can generate a maximum power output of 202hp and a maximum torque of 500Nm.
Its drive modes include Eco and Sport.
Notable amenities of the Toyota Fortuner include its leather interior amenities 4.2-inch instrument cluster and eight-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also has a JBL speaker system.
