Green with envy: The Hyundai Ioniq EV and its competitors

There are only a handful of electric vehicles (EVs), like the Hyundai Ioniq EV, sold locally today.

The Ioniq EV's zero-emissions power comes from an electric motor with 118hp and 294Nm of torque, and is paired to a 28kWh lithium-ion battery. Fully charged, the car has a range of 170 miles (273 kilometers), according to the US Environmental Protection Agency.

So with a price of P2.05 million, this Hyundai not only competes with other EVs, but other cars that have unique ways of lowering C02 emissions and saving fuel.

Changan Eado EV460 (P1.828 million)

The Eado EV460's electric motor produces 134hp and 245Nm of torque. But the highlight statistic is its range of up to 550km on a single charge, as claimed by the manufacturer.

Nissan Leaf (P2.768 million)

Considered to be the Ioniq EV's direct competitor, the Leaf can muster a range of 311 kilometers when fully charged, based on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) standards.

The Leaf's 40kWh lithium-ion battery and electric motor can dish out a peak 148hp and 320Nm of torque.

Ford Ranger Raptor 2.0L Bi-Turbo (P1.998 million)

This hulking 4x4 pickup truck might look like the least environment-friendly vehicle, but its numbers prove otherwise.

With its two-liter bi-turbo diesel engine, the Ranger Raptor has an estimated fuel consumption of 12kpl, a range of more than 900 kilometers with its 80-liter fuel tank, and is compliant to Euro 5 emissions standards.

Toyota Prius (P2.354 million)

An electric motor helps the Prius' 1.8-liter engine to move the car. Once the car is started, the e-motor comes to life first and propels the car in lower speeds. Then, the gasoline engine takes over when the Prius picks up pace

The gas engine, with 132hp and 207Nm of torque, then charges the electric motor once on the move, or when the battery charge is depleted. The Prius' estimated fuel economy figure is 23kpl.

Mazda CX-30 AWD Sport (P2 million)

Powering the CX-30 is a two-liter mill called Skyactiv-G. The engine features a cylinder deactivation system that shuts down some of the four cylinder light-load situations, such as constant-speed cruising.

Not only does cylinder deactivation ease the engine's work, Mazda also claimed that fuel consumption will benefit, too. The claimed fuel economy number for this sleek SUV is 18kpl.
