After “graduating” from riding the usual sub-400cc motorcycles, riders are targeting those that offer bigger engine displacement. However, to ensure everyone’s safety on the road (and to refrain from overestimating their skills), many tend to check out the ones just below the allowed expressway-legal restriction.
And since the tollway-ready rides are considerably a big jump from the usual 125cc- to 150cc-motorcycles, let us check one of those that almost made it to the regulation cut-off: the Yamaha YZF-R3.
Can the aforementioned sports bike deliver the fun and excitement similar to what the bigger-displacement offerings provide? Here’s our take on the ride.
The Yamaha YZF R3 is 2,090mm long, 730mm wide and 1,140mm tall with a 1,380mm wheelbase and 160mm ground clearance— nearly the same numbers as with other models in the category (height is also similar to many maxi-scooters).
The vehicle's total width allows the rider to cruise through tight traffic, which makes it a good city runner, The 780mm seat height allows one to stand with command while on full stop.
The Yamaha YZF-R3 resembles the aggressive look of its liter bike brethren, the YZF-R1. Its sharp lines form part of the front and side profile that gives a very athletic look. The front fascia has a central air duct that not just improves the aerodynamics, but helps direct the flow of cool air directly to the motorcycle’s radiator.
The Black Raven body color of the lend-out from Yamaha Motor Philippines does not wear much decals; just the R3 logo design at the tank and the small ABS sign at the side of the front fender. It also has an emblem at the side of the fuel tank and at the tail end of the vehicle.
While that is the case, the vehicle still brings an imposing presence on the road.
The driver seat position safeguards the rider during abrupt stops and accelerations, as well as when attacking corners. However, those who will ride pillion need to hug the driver tight to secure position as there are no handles for them to grab on to at the rear.
The Yamaha YZF-R3 is equipped with a liquid-cooled, four-stroke, double overhead cam, four-valve, 321cc engine. For those who have just upgraded from the likes of the YZF-R15, one can bank on the YZF-R3's output (which is a maximum of 41.4hp and 29.6Nm torque).
The power mill is mated to a six-speed transmission.
Providing the stopping power for the Yamaha YZF-R3 are hydraulic single disc brakes and anti-lock braking system in front for added control. The vehicle also features a full digital instrument panel that displays gear position, fuel meter, real-time and average fuel economy coolant temperature and clock.
The wide 17-inch tubeless tires ensure that it has enough grip on the road, whether straight or attacking corners.
Although the ride is not relaxed as using motorcycles in an upright position, the 37mm inverted fork suspension guarantees the needed rigidity during high speeds (and relative comfort to its target market).
The Yamaha YZF-R3 is relatively light and nimble, making it a good beginner bike. Its engine delivers ample power for that exhilarating riding experience, but more controllable compared to those with bigger displacement powertrains.
The P271,000 suggested retail price may be a bit restrictive to some compared to its competitors, but given its high “smiles-per-gallon” features and look, buyers can be assured that they will get their money’s worth with the Yamaha YZF-R3.
