Honda Cars PH honors young Filipino innovators through latest DOST-SEI’s imake.wemake meet
Following the partnership forged with the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), Honda Cars Philippines Incorporated (HCPI) recognized young scientists and innovators who joined the sixth cycle of the imake.wemake:create.innovate.collaborate competition.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
When and where were the awarding ceremonies for the sixth cycle of the imake.wemake:create.innovate.collaborate competition held?
The announcement of winners was held last July 27-28 at Crimson Hotel, Alabang, Muntinlupa City.Who are the three winners for the program?
The three winners for the latest cycle are Cavite Science Integrated School, Philippine Science High School: CALABARZON Campus, and Vinzons Pilot High School.A total of three schools, chosen by the Board of Judges, each received their respective Youth Innovation Awards at the Final Presentation and Awarding Ceremony held last July 27-28 at Crimson Hotel, Alabang, Muntinlupa City.
The DOST-SEI conferred the awards to the following teams “for exhibiting novelty and patentability, functionality and unique selling point, collaboration, design and feasibility, extensibility, and practicability”:
- Cavite Science Integrated School’s “Project Kaling: Geolocation Estimation of Forest Activities Using Triangulation and Sound Classification”
The project aims to address the long-standing issue of illegal logging and deforestation in the Philippines and aid forest rangers in monitoring them. It works by using the triangulation method and sound classification to estimate the geographical location of sounds- specifically, to detect sounds of equipment used in illegal forest activities. Team members are Uno Café, Rainier Guinto, Sigmund Francis Manalo, and Precious Zapanta, with coach Elain Malones.
- Philippine Science High School: CALABARZON Campus' “SAMGIOP: Development of an IoT-based Sensory Device for Leaf Damage and Abiotic Factors in Cabbage”
As an innovative response to the pest infestation problem in cabbages, their technology works via a two-part system: the SAMGIOP rover which detects leaf damage, and the SAMGIOP slave which detects abiotic factors — non-living chemical and physical aspects of an environment. The monitoring device relies on the Internet of Things (IoT) mechanisms with a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) embedded in the Raspberry Pi. Team members are Harvae De La Cruz, Joanna Daniella Fajardo, Ma. Hannah Isabel Suguitan, and Anjirehl Ernest Godfrei Zapata, with coach Marizel Villanueva.
- Vinzons Pilot High School's “E-QUIA: Remotely Operated Electrostatic Collector of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) Microplastics in Freshwater Environment”
Addressing the environmental damage caused by microplastics, particularly in freshwater, E-QUIA is a remote-controlled device that collects microplastics from freshwater environments via an electrostatic filtration system. The device uses an environmentally friendly method of separating microplastics from freshwater via electrostatic charges. Team members are Alliyah Cambronero, Reynier Francis Espinola, Allen Misty Jalina, and Lea Monina Pioquinto, with coach Jason Bargo.
The winners came from the projects of 20 finalists from 89 participating science high schools that were shortlisted in the aforementioned contest.
Composed of students and a teacher-coach, teams dedicated 90 days to design, build, and test their prototypes that will be fielded in the program designed to promote creative and collaborative mindsets among students.
Per HCPI, participants were allowed to solve actual problems in their communities or achieve a particular purpose using critical thinking, experimentation, risk analysis, engineering, and technical skills.
DOST-SEI Director Dr. Josette Biyo congratulated the winners and participants and urged them to continue to nurture their creativity to help solve problems in their community.
For his part, HCPI Vice President Atty. Louie Soriano echoed Biyo's sentiments.
“May our young Filipino innovators continue to become bearers of hope for the country, and never give up trying to help solve different problems through technology and innovation. Always remember that you can dream big dreams and that you have the power to realize a better life for your family and your communities,” Soriano was quoted as saying.
Further, he also commended the DOST-SEI for being impactful mentors to the students through programs like the imake.wemake.
