The next-gen Honda Civic Type-R has just broken the record for the fastest front-wheel-drive car at the famed Suzuka Circuit in Japan.
The previous title holder is the the stripped-back 2021 Honda Civic Type-R Limited Edition.
The Suzuka Circuit has always been the testbed for Honda’s performance models since 1962. The iconic circuit — home to the Japanese Formula 1 Grand Prix for all but two years since 1987 — offers high-speed chicanes and challenging corners which allowed Honda’s developmental team to push their vehicles through their paces and squeeze every ounce of speed, power, and stability in their performance-oriented cars.
The new Type-R Civic attacked the 5.8km track and managed to clock in at two minutes and 23.120 seconds. The next-gen model was 0.873 seconds faster than the Civic Type-R Limited Edition development car.
And while we’re on the topic of breaking records, the 10th-gen Civic Type-R GT broke the front-wheel-drive lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 2017. The aforementioned Civic covered a full lap in seven minutes and 43.8 seconds.
Per Honda, further information about the all-new Civic Type-R will be shared ahead of its launch later in 2022.
