The Honda Civic Type R is now officially for sale in the United States. We know you're curious as to how much it will cost locally if and when Honda Cars Philippines decides to sell it locally so to give you an idea, the lone yet comprehensively-equipped Touring trim it's sold as in the US has a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $33,900 or just over P1.69 million based on the current exchange rate.
For that amount, you get a car that's actually made in the United Kingdom with an engine that's made in the state of Ohio in the US and parts that are sourced from all over the globe. It's also a car that currently claims the fastest production front-wheel-drive record on the Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit with a time of seven minutes, 48.30 seconds--more than three seconds faster than the previous record holder.
But technically, what you get for nearly P1.7 million--more than P3 million if based on the current taxes and duties for imported cars and God knows how much with next year's revised taxes and duties--is a track-ready five-door hatchback that has a turbocharged 2.0-liter, inline-four DOHC i-VTEC engine that's good for 316 hp and 400 Nm of torque through a short-throw six-speed manual transmission and a helical limited-slip differential and onto the 245/30ZR20 Continental SportContact 6 high-performance tires on 20x8.5-inch black-finished aluminum wheels. Keeping things under control are 13.8-inch cross-drilled rotors clamped by 4-piston Brembo aluminum calipers in front and 12.0-inch rotors with single-piston calipers in the rear.
There are also its dual-axis strut front and multi-link rear suspensions, front and rear anti-roll bars, Type-R exclusive springs, bushings and damper mountings, newly-designed Adaptive Damper System that can continuously adjusts the damping force on all four corners using input from its three on-board G sensors, four suspension stroke sensors, and a steering angle sensor, dual-pinion variable-ratio electric power steering, drive-by-wire throttle and brake system, lightweight all-aluminum hood, high-flow exhaust system with three center-mounted exhaust outlets, and a comprehensive aerodynamic package "that delivers an exceptional balance of high-speed stability and low drag."
And then there are the three selectable driving modes that allow the driver to tune the car's throttle settings depending on the driving environment--either Comfort, Sport, or +R--and the automatic rev matching for two profiles, one for Comfort and Sport and another one for +R, which assists drivers in making smooth downshifts without the need for heel and toe downshifting.
So, is the all-new Honda Civic Type R worth all that, at least for you?
