It is no secret that many are now looking at a sustainable lifestyle as the effects of global warming become more evident. In the Philippines alone, 75 percent of Filipinos are actively seeking alternative solutions to help save the environment, according to a study conducted by Kantar.
And luckily, the country’s automotive industry now has offerings to provide a way to being gentle with the environment. For starters, Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) has brought locally the Toyota Corolla Altis Hybrid—making it easier to own an alternatively-powered vehicle nowadays.
In 2015, the Japanese global automaker announced the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050. A long-term initiative aimed to achieve zero carbon dioxide emissions and a net positive environmental impact, the six challenges in the program “encompass Toyota’s entire operations, from the manufacture of new vehicles to plant emission, entire vehicle life cycle, water usage optimization, recycling technologies and systems, and connecting nature conservation activities.”
The company added, “Toyota’s global vision of reducing adverse environmental impacts aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals of Affordable and Clean Energy, Climate Action, Clean Water and Sanitation and Responsible Consumption and Production. Toyota envisions a sustainable world where automobiles and the environment are in harmony.”
Offering a multitude of benefits, the Toyota Corolla Altis is one of Toyota Motor Philippines’ latest-generation cars utilizing a hybrid powertrain system. But the engineering of the Altis hybrid has been around since the late 1990s.
“Hybrid cars aren’t a new innovation. In fact, Toyota launched Toyota Prius in Japan in 1997 – the first mass-produced hybrid car in the world. It gained more popularity when it was introduced in the United States in 2000 attracting the interest of A-list celebrities. The Toyota Corolla Altis is one of Toyota Motor Philippines’ latest models that utilize hybrid system, which also comes at an affordable price,” TMP claimed.
The Toyota Corolla Altis Hybrid is powered by 16-valve 1.8L engine and an electric motor that is capable of churning out a maximum of 97hp and 142Nm. The technology automatically switches to any of three driving modes: conventional engine only, electric engine only, or a combination of the two, depending on the driving conditions. Mated to it is a continuously variable transmission (CVT) for an improved responsiveness as well as ensured smoother and quieter ride.
The electric motor fitted in the Toyota Corolla Altis Hybrid is said to be ideal for city driving. TMP shared that when the battery of the electric motor has enough charge, it automatically powers the vehicle to save on fuel. “During acceleration in an uphill driving, both the engine and battery supply power for optimum performance. The motor generator recovers the kinetic energy from braking, which recharges the hybrid battery,” it explained.
Developed under the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), the Toyota Corolla Altis Hybrid has a clean-cut look on the outside and an elegant feel on the inside. Occupants are welcomed by a spacious cabin, and upgraded driving ergonomics that put an emphasis on functionality and comfort.
Further, it also has been equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense suite of features including Pre-Collision System, Automatic High Beams, Lane Tracing Assist, Lane Departure Alert, and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control functions to help protect drivers and passengers should any untoward incidents occur.
To add to the engine’s dual power capability, the Toyota Corolla Altis Hybrid automatically switches to the gas engine when the car’s battery runs low and goes on to charge the battery without needing to be plugged into an outlet. “Plus, the hybrid battery comes with a five-year warranty,” TMP stated.
