How to Choose the Right Ceramic Coating for Your Vehicle

Honestly, the name's quite misleading. A ceramic coating--which initially makes you think of ancient Chinese vases that fetch mind-boggling prices--are protective coatings for your vehicle. They almost work like a car wax, acting as a 'shield' against water, chemicals, UV rays, and scratches. The only difference here is that ceramics last far longer than waxes (or even silicones). And the result? A protected, cleaner, and more attractive vehicle that needs less maintenance for a longer period of time. This liquid polymer can be semi-transparent or even transparent depending on the product you're using. Still, that doesn't mean you should immediately go out and have your car 'ceramified'. Here are some things you need to keep in mind before you apply it to your vehicle:

1. Check its hardness and strength level.

Generally, there are two types of ceramic coatings: those made from titanium nitride and chromium carbide. They are applied on steel to prevent abrasion, and their thickness level--among other factors--will determine its hardness and strength level. The harder the coat, the less it becomes prone to scratching, abrasion, and minor denting. Normally, those with the 9H hardness level are the best ones to use for vehicles. Still, it's best to get some input from credible auto paint and collision repair providers to be sure you're getting the right one for your vehicle.

2. It should repel water and dirt.

Most ceramic car coats have water repellant properties. This 'hydrophobic' property is what allows water to slide off easily on the surface, preventing those nasty water spots from forming on the paint's surface. What's more, it's what helps keep your vehicle almost dry even after battling it out with heavy rains. Aside from repelling water, make sure that the coat should prevent dust and dirt from bonding with the paint, making it easy to wash them off.

3. It should perform many tasks.

Choose those that offer many features--such as UV shield, water and dirt-repellant, and minor scratch/abrasion resistant. There are also some products that are versatile enough to be applied not just in cars, but also in boats or anything with metal parts. That would come in handy if you have a couple of vehicles that need a paint touch-up. Whatever the case, the more features packed in one product, the better--just be sure it has good reviews from satisfied customers.

4. Application should be easy.

This tip is for you if you want to apply the coat yourself. Make sure that the product comes with crystal clear instructions that are easy enough for anyone to understand. However, we would still recommend that you hire a professional do it for you. This saves you time and gives you peace of mind that things are done correctly. The last thing you want is to buy another bottle because you made a mistake.
