How to Get Your Car Unstuck from Sand or Mud
Getting stuck in mud or sand is one of the most exasperating experiences a car owner can face. When one gets trapped in wet and soft terrain, very often, the natural inclination is to step hard on the gas. Unfortunately, this doesn't help at all. On the contrary, all it does is dig you deeper into the hole.
Should you ever find yourself in such an unfortunate situation, know that you have many options to address the problem. Here are five tips to get your vehicle unstuck the old-fashioned way.
Start slow
Before trying anything else, try to accelerate gently out of your predicament. Make sure to keep your car in the lowest gear setting. It can help to turn your steering wheel left or right, just make sure there are no people or obstacles in the direction you’re going. If the car still can’t get out, then stop and try another technique.
Use your car mat
Placing a rubber car mat under the stuck tire can increase the traction and allow your car to escape a muddy puddle. Simply get one of the car mats in your car, place it under the stuck tire, get back to the driver’s seat, and drive slowly forward.
Release some pressure
Let out some air in your tire and let the pressure drop to 12 psi. This widens the amount of tire surface that touches the terrain, potentially giving you the necessary traction to get out. After you do, make sure to re-inflate your tire the soonest you can.
Shift in reverse
If you can't move forward, go backward. Depending on the manner of your getting stuck, putting your gears in reverse may be all that's needed to get you out of your predicament.
Get help
Ask one of your passengers or Good Samaritan passing by to assist you with a push as you attempt to get your car unstuck. Have them positioned at the side of the car that points opposite the direction your gear is in.
