Recently, Honda introduced a Civic powered by the brand’s e:HEV (hybrid electric vehicle) powertrain. According to the carmaker, the hybrid powertrain will allow the all-new Civic e:HEV to deliver engaging levels of performance, dynamic response, and feedback that have always been central to the nameplate’s appeal.
Under the hood of the hybrid Civic is a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle engine combined with two compact, powerful electric motors. The gasoline engine features a direct injection system optimized for faster and more efficient combustion and greater torque output.
In addition to the direct injection system, a number of technologies such as a low-temperature active catalyst that allows the powerplant to achieve a 41 percent thermal efficiency, and a modified design on the intake port help contribute to improved fuel economy while achieving specific output.
The hybrid powertrain is also equipped with a new Power Control Unit (PCU) which enables faster charge and discharge of electricity and results in a further 12 percent increase in power output over previous e:HEV applications.
That said, the Civic e:HEV is capable of putting out around 181 horses with 315Nm of torque.
An advanced powertrain allows the seamless shifting between EV, hybrid, and engine drive without any input from the driver. Meanwhile, the driver can select between four driving modes — Eco, Normal, Sport, and a new Individual mode — to tailor the Civic’s response in the area of powertrain, steering, and display.
“This is the latest generation of our industry-leading e:HEV technology, which itself is the culmination of over 20 years experience of designing, building, and refining hybrid drive systems. By carefully assessing the broad range of use-cases and operational environments, we have been able to take a ‘whole vehicle’ approach, making it a fun, highly compelling, and engaging driver’s hybrid,” said Civic e:HEV Project Leader Tomoyuki Yamagami.
The Honda Civic e:HEV will be made available in Europe later this year and will be the final mainstream Honda model to be electrified, following the CR-V, Honda e, Jazz, Jazz Crosstar, and HR-V.
